So you've just sat down to read some fanfiction. What are the top five things that will make you hit the back button fastest? - yoinked from
redheadsarehot ONE
Lack of proper paragraphs, and two different people speaking in the same paragraph. No. Just no. My brain doesn't separate things automatically, I like the staggered look of new paragraphs, I skim read and you're holding up my progress, dammit! If there isn't proper formatting, I am outta there. :(
TWO
Out of character shit in fics that Are Not Crack. I know we're all open to interpretation and that fandom is a crazy, nubile creature, but there are just some things I can't process. Like...Sirius bursting into tears because Remus glared at him, or Chekov being JUST happy all the time because it's Chekov and Chekov's are happy and bouncy and brilliant and sewenteen.
SIDE NOTE: You know what's really awesome? Low-key, particular Chekov, who is assertive and flatly says when he doesn't like things. I don't buy into all that blushing virgin jazz... I'd like to make reference to
Nicknames by
6street - a Chekov/Sulu (rated PG) where Sulu unsucessfully tries to come up with a nickname for Chekov. ...I super-holy-crap like the characterization in this.
THREE
...MPreg. Especially where it seems Perfectly Natural to everyone involved. I don't know. It just wigs me out when this is taken seriously in a fic. Sometimes I read through the fic, but more often than not, it's difficult for me. :/ It's one of the few kinks I really can't handle.
FOUR
Fics claiming to be canon, but blatantly ignoring canon is something that really gets to me. I know that it's difficult to get all the canon details straight in a fandom, especially if you're just getting into it and it's been around for years, but there are things that are considered general knowledge, and there are things that are easy to pick up if you simply do some pre-reading first. For example, things like the marauders actually being good friends with Peter in the beginning is considered canon. Things like Harry having green eyes (his mum's eyes - hello, it's mentioned how many times?), or Harry's patronus being a stag. That sort of thing.
FIVE
Author's notes in the middle of fics. It doesn't happen very often, but it's rather disruptive and if it something needs clarification, you should really be putting it at the end of the chapter/fic/whatever. Stars for endnotes are super distracting to me. Holy man. When I hit an A/N in the middle, I have a tendency to hit back because now I've popped out of the fic. :/ *is picky?*
