Summary: Sirius's first time keeping an eye on Harry.
Notes: I like to think that Sirius is generally hopeless, sometimes. ^^;
Sirius had never held a child before, so when it was finally time for him to face off with James' newborn, he found himself half-terrified he'll accidentally break him.
Baby Harry gurgled at him, in answer to Sirius' reminder of "Hey, kid - I'm your godfather." Sirius didn't know what else to say to a boy with no language skills, and they stared at each other for a while, equally fascinated by the faces that were still somewhat new to them.
"If, uh, you need me, I've heard you'll shout." Sirius said eventually. He leaned over the crib to whisper, "Kinda like your mum, eh?" He twisted his face to loosely mimic Lily's when she's forcing the marauders to do something domestic or around the house.
Harry giggled and reached out for him with chubby hands. Sirius snickered at the discovery that even the kid knows that look and he can't even crawl yet. Sirius nodded his approval of this and made a mental note to grab Harry the next time they're all fleeing from Lily's endless list of chores.
He waggled a finger at Harry, who caught it with surprising ease. Sirius gently pulled away and then did it again; Harry grabbed at his finger a second time, his bright round eyes watching him steadily.
"Oh-ho, what do we have here?" Sirius cooed to the baby. "Another Potter destined for Quidditch supremacy?" He laughed loudly, feeling relieved somehow. "I guess you really are Prongsy's kid."
Harry's face scrunched up at Sirius' sudden volume change, and he made the beginning noises of a child upset. Sirius' pleased grin vanished, to be replaced by a horrified look of almost-panic.
"Uh, wait, what I meant was that clearly you're Prongsy's kid, I mean, he said so, right? Wait, don't cry, c'monnnnnnn. We're cool, right?" Sirius glanced around for someone with more experience than him as Harry wailed away. "Shit, WAIT - YOU DIDN'T HEAR THAT." Harry wailed louder. "Oh, come on! Look, catch the fingers, caaatch the fingers. Remember when that was fun?"
Harry didn't seem that impressed with him anymore. Helplessly, Sirius stared into the cradle, getting the sinking feeling that he was going to be revoked of his Godfather-ness. "Look, kid, I can't sing, and I'm only good at loud distractions, so give me a break, yeah?"
"Sirius, what are you doing?" Remus curiously peeked into the room. He was carrying grocery bags in his arms, which meant that he and Lily were finally back from the store.
"I don't know," Sirius admitted immediately, "HELP ME." He moved to take the bags from Remus, so he could deal with the crying baby.
Remus bit back a smile and wouldn't let Sirius grab the groceries. "Pick up Harry."
Sirius gave him a dismayed look. "Aw, Remus, don't do this to me."
"Either listen to me, or listen to Lily when she comes in." Sirius made a face and Remus nodded at the crib. "Pick him up gently - don't forget to support his head."
"I think he's screaming louder," Sirius muttered, awkwardly following Remus' instructions. He held Harry in front of him for a moment, before holding him carefully against his chest. After a quick glance at Remus, he started swaying Harry back and forth.
Remus smiled as Harry quieted down and held back a laugh at the expression on Sirius' face. "Now, was that hard?"
"He's light Rems," Sirius said in a surprised voice. "I've held cats that were heavier."
Lily, her arms around a bag of potatoes, raised an eyebrow at him when she looked into the room. "Cats let you pick them up?" She asked mildly. With a quick glance at her son, she added, "James didn't know what to do either, the first time," and left with the potatoes.
"Well of course not," Sirius said, his pride and confidence restored. "James figured he'd handle the raising once he could get the boy on a broom."
"He still thinks that," James called out, from the next room.
Faintly, Lily replied, "Of course you do."
Remus shook his head, and went to put the rest of the groceries away. Sirius rocked Harry for a while, until the boy had fallen asleep.
