I thought I'd share some family history today. For those who don't know, I'm first generation American on my mother's side, and third on my father's. Both sides of my family came from Romania beforehand, with some migration to France and Austria in later generations on my father's father's side. All four or my great-grandmothers were named Anna, and all were Romanian with the exception of my paternal grandfather's mother, who was born in Austria, and her husband (my great-grandfather Jack), who was born in Paris, France.
My dad's mother has taken to digging deep into our family tree since my grandfather died in 2006. She has managed to unearth some remarkable photographs, two of which I can share with you all now.
This first one was taken in Moldova, Romania in 1903. The young woman to the far left is one of my great-grandmother Annas (my father's mother's mother). The older people seated in the centre are her parents: my great-great-grandfather, Meier, and his wife, my great-great-grandmother, Sheva. The others present are cousins, I believe.
This one is of the same great-grandmother Anna. She's pictured with her brother, who came to visit her at boarding school. The frock she's wearing was the school uniform. Romania, circa 1905.
My mother's side of the family is more easily traced in some ways, since I was the first born in the States. However, as my mother's parents are Holocaust survivors, a lot of documentation has been destroyed over the course of time. A precious few photographs exists. I plan on scanning them in April when I fly to LA to visit my mom and her mother, who was also from the region of Moldova in Romania.
