Cemetery Crumble

Aug 24, 2010 22:09

Husband and I spent the afternoon picking wild blackberries in the cemetery at the bottom of our hill. The thunderstorm that soaked London for the previous two days left the air smelling delicious and fresh. Since we didn't have a basket, we put the berries into Husband's bowler. The lining is a tad, er, moist now, but can be easily cleaned. :)

When we got home, I put the blackberries into a baking dish with a couple of small green apples to make a crumble. The berries were so plump and fit to burst that I had to put a baking sheet at the bottom of the oven to catch the juice dripping out of dish. Afterward, I turned the excess juice into a sauce to drizzle over the crumble.

Eaten hot with a dollop of vanilla pod ice cream, a happy day has ended well.

It's astounding to me how so many people overlook the bounty of fresh fruit growing in London. At the moment, there are countless blackberry bushes, pear trees, apple trees, and heavy bunches of redcurrants and blackcurrants growing everywhere here - far too much food for the wasps and birds to handle on their own! People have become so accustomed to finding their food in supermarkets, that it seems they don't remember where any of it actually comes from.
