Unsung Heroes: Anime Edition

Nov 15, 2014 20:53

I could probably make a completely different post about real-life unsung heroes, but since that would take much longer than what I am going to talk about, I'll stay within my original parameters.

I haven't seen too many reviews for Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru (or Yuyuyu, which seems a little too stutter-inducing), but I for one am adoring it. All the little details - the OP & ED changing to accomodate the storyline, the characters' growth, the strategic nature of the enemies (called Vertexes) and then how the girls have to work together in new ways every battle to defeat them, have all won me over.

I especially like the way the battles are very unique, thereby highlighting new moves or abilities - I do wish that there were more battles, simply to showcase the fighting, but the very fact that they didn't go the monster-of-the-week route also made me happy - and has kept me on the edge of my seat. After episode 5, I wondered if episode 6 was going to be the final one (what was left to do?), and after this week, I had no idea if we'd be stopping here, until the preview for next week came after the ED.

The fact that the girls seem to exist in a strange island after the first few episodes of seeing school mates has been weird (an empty hospital save for 2-3 staff was the weird locale this week) and has bugged me but not ruined the show; they're supposed to have accomplished their mission in secret, and the whole freezing time-dimension thing was done so well in that first episode, and keeps the logistics of their fights in the realm of believable. Science-fiction: you gotta straddle that fence expertly, between super powers and a rational level of suspension of disbelief.

I also like how their Mankai wasn't limited to actually defeating 5 enemies and leveling up, but relied on their willingness to expend all their energy to save their city, with no guarantee that it would be enough. It also makes perfect sense that there would be consequences to doing that; I don't think any of the four were high enough to do Mankai the way Karin had explained previously.

With each episode, I haven't quite known what was going to happen, and it's a treat to have two such series this season (the other being Amagi Brilliant Park, which is just bonkers in the best way). With this next episode, I assume they'll resolve the issues with their injuries, but who knows? With no idea just how many episodes are in the tube, I'm just going to trust the staff to keep pulling out quality work.
