Attention Westerberg High students: Today will be the first meeting of the Mathletes Club. While you will be preparing for and competing in slightly different contests depending on grade level, the math department has decided to combine practices this year. While you do not have to attend every practice session in order to compete, I strongly encourage that you do so--each teacher determines extra credit differently, but my students will only be able to earn extra credit for high performance in competition, not merely for showing up. However, everyone who does show up will be given snacks--I do not see how anyone can be expected to do math on an empty stomach.
Mathletes should prepare their answers to the problem of the week before the meeting--show your work!--as we will be going over the solution first thing, but I encourage everyone to work out at least the answer to the easy problem of the week--brains need to be kept in shape as much as muscles.
Easy Problem of the Week:
Let x=π/2, y=3πx, z=2y/π, and w=z/3. What is w equal to?
Advanced Problem of the Week:
A cylinder with radius r and height h has volume 1 and total surface area 12. Compute 1/r + 1/h.
And yes, today's snack will be pie. I encourage everyone to attend, even if you do not consider yourself particularly good at math--as with anything else you will improve with practice. I really think this is our year to win!
[ooc: Temeraire should be addressed as Mr. Lung Tien or Xiang to other teachers. Replies will be from
calculusdude and I'll probably be doing a lot of backdating tomorrow afternoon and evening because I have orientation bright and early tomorrow. And yes, you can reply with attempts at solving the problems.]
Solutions: w = π and 1/r + 1/h = 6
