Seen the movie.
This movie is about the story of Gainsbourg, told by himself as a documentary film.
Gainsbourg is very popular (only in France though) as an old-time multi talented artist:, song writer, composer, singer and actor. He was the husband of Jane Birkin, and father of Charlotte Gainsbourg.
I used to listen to his music a long time ago even though he was not very famous in Japan. It was probably my inquisitiveness towards French movies that lead me to him. His private life included numerous love affairs with several big name actresses, such as Brigitte Bardot, and Jane Birkin (Hermes created a black supple leather bag for her; that eventually became known as the "Birkin bag"), which also attracted me.
But, this film would be interesting for people who knew him only because it is a rather narcissistic portrait of his.
He claimed that he was like a person who is black on the inside and white on the outside, which meant that he had not yet become mentally free from discrimination. He was born as Jewish during WWII under the military rule of the Nazis. His mother tried to get abortion but failed and he was (accidentally) born. His face was ugly. He had been agonized in life, which paradoxically made him a ladies man (I mean, girls tend to be attracted to kind of a man with a shadow past, struggling in life etc) . He also had outstanding talent and he developed it well. In the film, he's been chain-smoking, showing his frustration, intense energy, over-activeness and loneliness. I've realised something they all have in common, that other great artists as well have traits such as a buried rage, acute frustration, and an unhappy childhood.
