I'm not really an expert because I've only been into photography for maybe a little over a year now-- I started with film and recently just bought my first digital SLR. To be really honest photography is such a common hobby that there really is no standard of what's a good or a bad picture.

I would say Shige's photos are a lot like mine: they're amateur, and they're really for documenting and preserving memories. But I don't mean amateur in a bad way: based on his photos it doesn't appear that he's ever tried advanced stuff like macros or other technical skills like depth of field, which is used a lot in close-up photography.

Don't get me wrong, I like Shige's photos, most notably the tree stump on the bottom left of pg 215, and I especially like the dark photo of the apples in a glass. He's not a professional and neither am I, but honestly you don't have to be one to take a great picture. What really counts is whether or not it provokes some sort of emotion within you, and some of those photos did that for me (and hopefully for others too).
