30 Days of Who
Since I've cunningly managed to miss this Rather A Lot, here is me trying to catch up:
Day 02 - Your Favourite Classic Series Episode
My usual answer is The Time Monster with the addendum that, yes, I know perfectly well how bad it is, but, lo, I love it anyway. That's mostly true. The plot is absurd, I have watched it more times that I could possibly admit to and I still have no idea how the Master hopes to take over the universe with a flappy bird dude and, oh god, there is some seriously bad dialogue and the Atlantean dude with the terrifying eyeliner might be the worst actor in the history of the Whoniverse.
On the other hand, Jo gets to save the universe, while the Doctor is still trying to make nice with his ex; the Yates gets blown up cliffhanger is smashing; the Master gets a ridiculous amount of awesome things to do, including pretending to be a pacifist, impersonating the Brigadier, tricking Benton with "look behind you!", seducing Galliea, and chilling with a cigar and whiskey, and there is a whole episode where the Doctor and the Master's TARDISes are inside each other and they basically flirt the whole time. How is that not brilliant?
And the daisy speech is nice and all, but I think it overrated and one of the lesser good things about the story. Meanwhile, I think the Minotaur looks fine. I mean, it's not brilliant, but it's hardly the Worst Make-Up Ever.
Sometimes I feel guilty because this is not a proper OMGTHISISBRILLIANTLOVE, but a lol!ironic love and that feels a bit like a betrayal of the show what I adore, as though it is all this silly nonsense that I love in some sort of irritating post-modern way, when it is actually frequently brilliant, often marvellous, and almost always entertainingly good, so here are some stories I love and think are amazing telly: The Aztecs, The Crusade, The Massacre, Power of the Daleks, The Mind Robber, Invasion, The War Games, season seven, The Mind of Evil, The Sea Devils, Genesis of the Daleks, The Ribos Operation, The Androids of Tara, City of Death, The E-Space Trilogy, The Keeper of Traken, Logopolis, Castrovalva, Kinda, The Caves of Androzani, The Mark of the Rani, and season 26.
Day 03 - Your Favourite New Series Episode
OH THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN SO EASY LAST YEAR. Since I saw it, my favourite new series ep was The Sound of Drums. There is nothing about it that does not make me ridiculously happy. Team!Ten&Martha&Jack, Simm!Master, Lucy Saxon and all the twisted companion parallels, the phone!sex, Martha's awesome driving skills, Martha's snapping at the Doctor about her family, Simm's facial expressions, Lucy's dancing, "I'm coming back" - one of my favourite of all companion moments ever. My expectations were SO HIGH after Utopia and this totally met them.
However, there is now Eleventy, the New Series Doctor Of My Heart, and the utterly amazing series five. They're all my favourites! is my instaresponse, but obv that's exaggerating it. Would I really rather watch Victory of the Daleks than The Sound of Drums? No. And by employing this cunning comparison strategy, I find my favourites are The Eleventh Hour, The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone and The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang. (And maybe TBB, tVoV and VatD...I REALLY LOVE SERIES FIVE, OKAY?)
Anyway, The Big Bang wins. It is all I ever wanted from a season finale. The character stuff is brilliant, the plot stuff is delightful, and it makes me cheer ridiculously. Also, River Song.
