I think you must have missed the last episode. A couple of those problems have been answered.

On the Sam vs Dean thing. I've always thought the writers were pretty even, and it's more to do with what the viewer brings to the show that determines which one got the shorter end of the stick.

You read a bunch of fandom from Dean-girls and it's all about Poor Dean and how Sam is such a jerk. But then fall in with the Sam-girl crowd and Sam's the victim and Dean's the one who gets all the breaks.

From my viewing I get that they take turns screwing up, being assholes to each other, and being tormented by the horrible things that happen to them. And I really don't think the writers paint Sam (or Dean) as a 'bad guy' and that the blaming one or the other comes from fanon rather than canon.

For example, in canon, all we know about Sam leaving for college is:

1) John told him to never come back.
2) Dean hasn't 'asked' Sam for anything in two years.
3) If Dean had called ahead in the first episode, Sam might not have answered ( ... )

I'm not going by fanon and I'm a little insulted you think I am ( ... )

Then when Dean comes back Sam has the prescence of mind to lie about Ruby? Seriously? His not so dead Brother is standing right there and Sam still has the ability to go "huh. If this is him he'll be pissed to know I'm chilling with a demon so I'll call her...Kristie." Then Sam remained both physically and emotionally distant through out that episode. I get the emotional distance. But Sam is a clinger. When things go wrong he grips tighter. Remember in ELAC? He wouldn't Dean an inch of space. Same with the deal. When it clicked that Dean was alive Sam would have started hovering to make sure that it was Dean and that he stayed that way, because that is how Sam reacts to other people being in danger. The whole notion of him running off by himself while his suddenly alive brother is possibly vulnerable doesn't fit with Sam's characterization ( ... )

Potential answer to question 1: I'm assuming it took more than 5 minutes, more than 1 angel, and more than a couple angel lives to rescue Dean's soul. So going into the deepest part of Hell and getting Sam's soul out of the cage, which is also occupied by Luci and Mike who are probably beyond not happy, would be more than a walk in the park ( ... )

And going through and rereading my comment about Castiel not being THAT much of a jerk makes me feel bad, because he's not a jerk at all. He's actually significantly too nice for his own good.

Cas is a jerk. He has moments of being nice but he also has moments of being a complete and utter tool. He fits in with the Winchesters quite well that way.

Aw, he's not so bad once you get past ssn4. I love him in ssn5, but his ability to get pushed around by The Boys in ssn6 is frustrating me.
He's still one of my favourite characters though, so I admit to being a bit biased.
