HIST 307 Essay Prompts

Select four of the five following topics for discussion. Your answers must be in short essay format. By now you should be familiar with the requirements, but if you find your memory has been overwhelmed by the rigors of studying for this exam, consult the course guidelines you were given at the beginning of the semester or see me for a replacement.

Remember that this test is a closed book examination. I suggest you memorize any direct quotations you may wish to utilize. You will have ninety minutes to complete your essays. They are worth twenty percent of your final grade.

Testing begins at 3:00 PM. Don't be late.

  1. Numerous technological developments impacted the manner in which warfare was conducted in the ancient world. Discuss the role of chariots in the military and society in three of the ancient civilizations we have studied this term.
  2. Alexander the Great is best known as a conqueror, but also remembered as one of Aristotle's most famous students. Select and examine two means by which Alexander disseminated Greek philosophy and culture as he expanded his empire.
  3. Several ancient societies depended on mobility for survival rather than the establishment of permanent settlements. Describe the advantages and disadvantages of nomadic lifestyles in the ancient world, paying particular attention to technological and cultural evolution.
  4. Advances in metalurgy not only made more durable weapons possible, but altered the designs and uses of blades in warfare. In what other ways did victory on the battlefield depend on production at the forge?
  5. Armies from the city-states of Greece, the kingdoms of Mesopotamia, and the tribes of Central Asia were organized according to the needs and class structures of each group. Select two of these groups, and compare and contrast their military hierarchies and cultures.
