This is a twist on the Letter Meme. Instead of coming up with ten items for a certain letter, you come up with five song titles for a certain letter and explain why you picked them. If interested then leave a comment. I'll give you a letter. You post this blurb in your journal along with your list. (Download links welcome, but not required.)
So...
malnpudl gave me the letter F, and I shall strive to do this....though F seems quite a hard letter for me. Should be interesting though.
And yet when I get to it, I have way more F songs than I thought, and I found picking just five too difficult... there were always at least seven I wanted to include, so I went with ten instead, and even then I was ignoring a few songs I really love.
The Letter F (not in a specific order)
1. Falls to Climb ~ R.E.M.
I've been listening to REM for so many years now, and they do seem to have a song for every moment. The only version I have of this song is a crappy copy, and yet I still love it. The wording is fantastic, weaving over a simple and yet haunting tune.
"Romantically you martyr me, and miss this story's point" Is my favourite line in this song, and I think sums up the feeling of the peice.
2. Flowers Never Bend with the Rainfall ~ Simon and Garfunkel
Simon and Garfunkel were my childhood, listening to my parents records and tapes. This song reminds me of all the car trips we took, singing along to songs such as this, and in many cases for me, only understanding the songs much later.
This specific song is one of my favourites. I love the guitar in this, the notes coming quickly one after the other, and I love the vocals. And as always, you'll notice this with me, it's the words that grab me. Beautiful decriptive peices strung together, with the simple and effective chorus.
"So my fantasy becomes reality, and I must be what I must be and face tommorrow" Is the line that sticks with me from this song, cause sometimes I think this sums up life, just getting on with being yourself, in the face of this confusing mixed up world.
3. Firefly Min Theme ~ Sonny Rhodes
Firefly grabbed my attention and didn't let go. It's a simple concept, a spacewestern, made complex by the vast unexplored background of the universe. And this song, though short, captures that. The old west style violin work, the spaceship sound effects and the vocals, come together into 52 seconds of a lovely song. And well, "you can't take the sky from me" it's hope, or rather perseverence, and perseverence is the by-word for Firefly.
4. Four Days ~ Counting Crows
"All I want is something good, it gets harder every time" They are the first words of this song, and when I heard them I never let them go. The song has a good beat, nice lyrics, and I love the Counting Crows, so it couldn't not be included in this list. I love how the tune rises and falls within this song.
5. Free Fallin' ~ Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
I got into Tom Petty through a friend at uni, just this past year, and I love the songs I have. Free Fallin' is a great example. I love his voice, the great tunes. This song, like many others by them, are so very catchy, and well put together. Once again I love the lyrics, and the drum section in the middle of the song is great. And while, very american i content, it still resonates with something inside of me, even if it's just the tune, which seems to settle in the base of my skull. A great song.
6. Forgiven, not Forgotten ~ The Corrs
I love The Corrs, the gentle music, fairly generic I suppose, but with the celtic underscore, and some great imagery in the lyrics. This one in particular has some lovely piano pieces within it, moving into the electric guitar section, all tied together by segments of violin.
"The one-eyed furry toy, that lies upon the bed, has often seen her cry" is just one of the great lines, made better by the clear strong vocals.
7. Farewell Andromeda (Welcome to my morning) ~ John Denver
Another songwritter I inherited from my parents, John Denver was the other half of my childhood. This is a good example of at least one section of his work. Simple guitar music really, with a nice voice, comes together to make a good song. I just like the concept really, welcome to my morning/evening/happiness, it's a really upbeat song, and it never fails to cheer me up.
8. Fun, Fun, Fun ~ The Beach Boys
As would be expected from the beach boys, a polished vocal song, with cool music, that is just as advertised, fun. A great slice of life song, that tells a very really story. And it's the Beach Boys... whats not to like.
9. Fast Car ~ Tracy Chapman
A great voice, and a depressing song, that is yet still full of hope. It's just pretty really, lovely tune. It always makes me think of staring out of a window into the pouring rain...but I've no idea why.
10. Flying ~ Blue Rodeo
Well, it makes me think of Due South, which is always a good thing, it's on the first soundtrack. And it's a cool song, great to sing along to at the top of your voice.
"run out of patience, lean on the bold faced lie" is one of my fave lines. I just love the way this song comes together.
Well, that probably wasn't very interesting, what I love about songs is apparently very hard for me to explain in words. But there are my ten F songs.
