This was a (temperature) hot weekend at the AKC trial in Central Point. Lovely venue. Nice surface. Great judges. Fun trial. They did a good job of cooling the arena with 100-degree days. Still, it was *hot*.
Cali and I do not tolerate the heat well. She kept cool(ish) from the water in the wading pool. I kept cool(ish) by wetting my head and drinking cold water/juice. But it was pretty darn hot. Felt hotter the second day but maybe that was just my body protesting another day of the heat.
We did some good work this weekend. My primary goal was to improve my timing so that Cali would get better notice about changes in direction. With my energy focused on the timing of my crosses, I sort of forgot other important things (like reminding Cali to collect after tunnels and before triples). By our third run, I was putting it all together and we had a brilliant premier JWW run on Friday. Alas, no video, so you'll just have to take my word on that.
Saturday was a hard day. Cali knocked more bars than usual and just plain crashed a few. I wonder if it had something to do with the heat. But, honestly, it is hard to know. Frustrating and worrisome at the same time. I hate the crashes. I worry she will hurt herself. The crowd gasps. It's painful and embarrassing. Otherwise, Cali was her usual brilliant self - connected, responsive, eager, and enthusiastic.
For me, the most technically challenging course was Saturday Premier Jumpers. While our run could have been cleaner and smoother, I was nonetheless pleased with how well we ran this tough course.

Here's hoping that the summer heat soon gives way to cooler and moister fall days.
