weekend update

friday
went on friday to timekode, which can best be explained as a giant dance party. it takes place once a month in the back room of an african cafe (which smells faintly of curry when you first arrive, but you grow immune to it after a while) that has a teeny tiny bar, and dj's mix it up all night. it's not a club, it's not a bar, it's just a fantastic fucking dance party. the clientele are generally 25-35, semi-hipster, and everyone is two degrees of separation from everyone else. at one timekode a few months ago, the room looked like a rerun of one of our legendary house parties.

early on in the night there are breakdancers - or am i supposed to call them b-boys and b-girls? most of them are pretty damn good. then the regular folk take over and dance all night, or until we get kicked out at 3 or 4 am.

the drink of choice is the dark and stormy, a spicy mixture of dark rum, lime juice (optional) and ginger beer (ginger beer, not ginger ale - with ginger ale, it's called a moscow mule, which is also nice but not as nice). delicious. one too many d&s's led me to A, who was cute enough and fun enough but was, alas, a goddamn rice king. apparently, you can take the girl out of vancouver, but not the vancouver out of the girl.

saturday
caught some morning sun with D, before he had to go to work and before the beach got too crazy. there was watermelon. it was delicious.

headed with K-dawg to little italy for italian week, which caps off with the ferrari festival. they close down 10 city blocks, park ferraris on the street, have food stands and live music, and lots o' beer gardens (or, as one politically correct bilingual sign called it, jardin de biere).

met up with C and T, who are (a) recently engaged, (b) originally from sudbury, and (c) ridiculously funny. we basically wandered up and down the street for a bit, taking in the local colour, stopping at various performances (a kick-ass opera trio, a salsa band, a 50's beach band). i particularly appreciated a teenage cover band whose lead guitarist had a mop of long, curly brown hair and was sporting a motley crue t-shirt...juxtaposed with their performance of that song from the goo goo dolls that was in that movie with nicolas cage and meg ryan, where nicolas cage plays an angel.

i love street fairs. i love walking in the street.

anyway, we ended up at a beer garden and then at a house party. it was fun.

DON'T FORGET TO CALL YOUR DAD!

boys, music
