last night's dinner with parents was borderline disastrous, with them finding out all the little details about The Boy that i knew they wouldn't like, and with my dad asking me point-blank what i was doing after culinary school. i stupidly chose a restaurant i hadn't been to before, so the food was bad, the service passable, and the bill far too much for what we had actually gotten.

and while my parents walked me home (because i live in such a dangerous neighbourhood), we discussed what to do with my M.Sc. certificate (diploma?) that i have been holding onto for the past couple of months.

ME: "well, i was going to send it home with you guys, but i think i'd like to hang onto it. maybe get it framed..."
MOM (sullenly): "it's not like you're using it or anything."

ouch.

i got home, and despite my intent to detox this week (after the excesses of my vacation, a break from meat, processed food and alcohol), i made myself a stiff gin & tonic. my poor roommate K, who i have only known for about a week, got an earful about my evening.

however, dinner tonight was infinitely better - almost like we were a real family. whatever that is.

on a completely unrelated note, this craigslist post is quite funny, and is unusually entertaining for the ottawa site.

parents, boys
