I've been thinking alot about what happened at Virginia Tech. The thing that scares me most about the whole thing is not the prospect of some crazy guy coming and shooting up a crowd of people, as horrible as that is. That is an isolated, tragic incident

No one but police and possibly professional hunters should have guns. And I'm not talking recreational hunters who "NEED" their guns so they can go out on weekends and be rednecky, I'm talking people who kill animals for food commerically. The average joe just DOES NOT need to be carrying around guns! Also, if guns were banned and always had been, think of how less dangerous criminals would be. It'd be way harder to rob someone or hold up a liquor store or carjack someone with a knife or whatnot. Still possible, but I bet people would be more courageous about running away from criminals at that point. Bad guys hide behind guns because they know they can inflict extreme damage without even getting close.
The Constitution is great, and I don't want to advocate fucking with it too much. It's a slippery slope right there. But at the same time, that particular part has always struck me as one of the more out-dated bits. Le sigh. And now they want to go and put MORE guns out there.
Maybe if you had to prove that you'd never, oh, I don't know, been in a mental institution before you bought a gun??

This reminds me of the Robin Williams @ the Met sketch where he's talking about how Britain doesn't allow any handguns:
"In Britain, the criminals don't have guns and the police don't have guns. So when a cop is trying to apprehend a criminal, he can just say 'Stop! ... Or I'll say stop again!'"
Hmm, funnier when he does it than when I write it out. Odd, that.
