Bonnie's dad is out of town for the next few days, so she was in charge of feeding the horses this morning (I'm up tomorrow). When she got there, R.J. was gone. The gate was closed as tightly as it was the night before, all of the fences were intact, and he was gone. She almost had a heart attack, of course, and quickly called her boyfriend, her father's girlfriend, and the police. They hadn't had any reports of horses on the highway, so she, Joe and Glenda searched the surrounding woods. Before long, R.J. was found behind the large pasture where Sharif and Rippy spent the night. The police were called off (they never showed up anyway) and all was well. Seriously, that colt didn't have a scratch on him, which is almost unbelievable considering all of the thick brush he must've pushed through. I missed all of the action because I was already in class at the time. I'd say "maybe next time" only I don't want there to be a next time. ~g~
Anyway, it turns out that he jumped a low part of the fence, so Joe wrapped brightly-colored string around the tops of all of the fence-posts to discourage future outings. I went to help feed this evening and managed to find the exact spot where he jumped out. The earth was damp, so his hoof-prints were unmistakable. Mystery solved. Still, what a nightmare.
Well, all's well as ends better. At least now we know what a great jumper he'll be when he grows up, not to mention what a good trail horse he'll be. We also now know that he's definitely got his big brother's personality. ~resists the temptation to suggest naming him Nanami~
Anyway. I'm having trouble loading the ferret pictures, so they'll have to wait.
