Sadly, I really don't have any good dude pics from this afternoon. Everything came out as a crazy blur of activity, which is a reasonable representation of the day.

I too think the cake looks great! When you mentioned fondant, I envisioned it covering the whole cake, similary to what they do here for wedding cakes. And my hair was standing on end thinking of you trying to smooth it all over a cake. I like the end result that you've done.

How did the cookies turn out? You were questioning in a previous post about freezing the dough and/or the baked cookies. Did they turn out okay?

And it's interesting you mention about the fruit rollups and the food coloring. I've been watching a few movies lately (King Corn, Food Inc.) and reading books (The China Study, Eat to Live) about the evils of the food industry and all the bad things they put in our food here, and a recurring theme has been that the UK and Europe doesn't do that. It's regulated that food be labeled when genetically modified things are used in food, etc. Sorry to go of topic, but when you mentioned the food color thing, it popped in my head.

Anyway, I know what you mean about being exhausted after the birthday party. But I bet he had a blast.

yeah I thought I wasn't being very clear with my description. Now that I've worked with it a bit, I might attempt it again (NOT with the pre-colored version, good lord!) Thing is, I prefer buttercream for taste, so it'll be tough to come up with a reason to try using it. I'm certainly not going to do it next weekend for his home cake, as that'll just make things difficult for me!

I didn't use the frozen dough, but I probably should soon. I decided I hadn't frozen enough, as the cookie pops need to be a lot thicker than normal cutouts in order to support the stick inside. I'd only frozen about half a batch, and I was worrying, so I made another batch. lucky Cookieman, anyway!

ooh those books sound interesting. I have only read one thing which was similar (Fast Food Nation), and I found the subject really interesting. Maybe I should check those out. The food colouring debate comes up on the mum forums here quite frequently, and I'd love to learn a bit more about it. I can say that the difference in what's on offer here and what's on offer there is pretty significant. My US cake decoration candies are all shades of neon and anything you can think of, whereas the ones in shops here tend to be ones found in nature, if that makes any sense. I KNOW Fruit Roll-Ups in the US are a much brighter red than the version I found here. Also, Starburst's strawberry is muted here.. yeah I notice weird things. :) Considering I still have your parcel sitting on my dining table, I should probably just pop more items in there, for comparison purposes. hah.
