I know he turned into a wackjob in his later years. However, his music was a consistent soundtrack throughout my childhood, even when my personal preferences drifted towards rock/metal.
I've seen many references now to him having been a success story of the Mtv generation, which I suppose I'm a member of. However, I was obsessed with Thriller before I ever had access to Mtv, or was old enough to stay up to watch Friday Night Videos. Who could listen to that base line for Billie Jean and not want to turn it up, and possibly dance (poorly) to it? When I did finally see him perform on TV, I was amazed. He was like magic. sparkly, magic.
We're buried in 'coverage' of the event over here, so I've no doubt it's 10x as bad back in the US. I don't mourn his career; that was over a long time ago, in my eyes. I think my reasons are more selfish than anything. I mourn the bit of my childhood that he occupied, if that makes sense.
Also, I know many people are asking "What about Farrah??" I can only speak for myself when I say that I really had no exposure to her at all, and thus her passing doesn't carry the same weight with me as his does. I am pretty sure I've never seen an episode of Charlie's Angels. It's sad to hear of anyone dying the way she did, and in this respect I probably feel more sympathy for her than I do for MJ, but the fact remains that she didn't touch my life the way he did in his prime.
Now if only they'd stop showing photos of him from the last ten years or so. The cartilage where his nose used to be FREAKS ME OUT.
