I'm in a ramble-on sorta mood! Must be Saturday! :D
I won't bother to squee about tonight's fantasmagorically bromantical episode [3.08] since I got all that fangirling out of me system over on merlinxarthur! ^_^' However... Whenever I join a new fandom I'm always overcome with fic-ideas in the beginning [none of which ever see the light of day]. So I thought it was high time I made a brief list outlining a couple of the random plot-bunnies that hopped into existence in my head. As I was saying to
itzcoatl t'other day - discussing fanfic can be just as satisfying as reading it [specially for meta!nerds like me. >< ]
Unfortunately, I don't have any bosom-buddies in the Merlin fandom [yet!] so this is going here instead of in some poor sod's inbox. Bit like talking to meself, really. How sad, lol! Anywho, I don't expect much of a reaction to this, but if anyone in the fandom has any thoughts, I'd be grateful to hear 'em.
I thought at least this way someone might stumble across a bunny they like the look of and write it down themselves.
[Cuz, y'know, otherwise they'll just continue to plague me.]
Little twitchy nosed bastards... ¬_¬
Okay! Because I'm lazy and unoriginal, to kick off, here are a list of films/books I think would lend themselves well to a Merlin X-over [I bet most of these will have been done2death already, but as I'm a n00b they're only now occurring to me, is what I'm saying.]
X-Overs Great & Small.
Stardust.
[I'm sure I saw this somewhere already, but anyway...]
Arthur is a Fallen Star that Merlin must accompany back to Camelot so that he can present him as a gift to his beloved [room for a bitchy-OC here?] Along the way they meet sky-pirates, evil witches, a talking tree [if we're going by the book] and a unicorn [again], and Merlin realises his beloved is a bitch. [Could swap Tristan's mum for Ygraine, only missing presumed dead, so Arthur gets to meet his mum properly. But, if Arthur's a fallen star... would that mean that maybe Ygraine was one too, originally? There is a coincidental similarity between Yvaine = Ygraine, but that's only because Gaiman took an old French version of the name Owain and used it on a girl. Silly billy!]
Harry Potter.
[I'd eat my pointy hat if I found out this hadn't already been done!] Merlin & Arthur at Hogwarts! My idea for this one was that Arthur would be the big-shot pureblood, Head Boy, Captain of the Quidditch team, probably closely related to Godric Gryffindor, who brings his manservant [a Squib] along with him to Hogwarts. Thought about it two ways - everyone thinks Merlin's a squib but he's actually so powerful he doesn't need a wand [he doesn't get to go to classes like all the cool kids, sleeps next to the kitchen, has to hang around with the house-elves, etc.] Had the idea of Arthur actually being like Neville-level rubbish at magic but Merlin always works his wandless mojo to make him look great. [Also? Merlin = BORN SEEKER.] Anywho, I reckoned as a sort of Labyrinth of Gedref-ref the fic could revolve around the first/one of the first Triwizard Tournaments. Cue suspicious visitors from other schools who, surprisesurprise, want to kill Arthur...
Eragon.
We have the evil king with a dragon under his castle! Uther = Galbatorix! At first I thought it would have to be Merlin who discovered a dragon's egg, but then I thought: wouldn't it be a cool twist if the egg hatched for Arthur?? Because if Arthur's a dragonlord then Uther would have to be one too - so, either Uther is secretly a dragonlord [why tf did he bother to keep one?? never understood!] or, Uther is not Arthur's father. Plus, y'know, there'd be room for SO MUCH bromance in this one, w/ Merlin finding out Arthur's secret and helping him hide it [and maybe not being able to tell Arthur that he too is a dragonlord, or at least not immediately?] Plus there could be some kind of shared-psychic-whatsit between Dragonlords that'd bring Merthur closer together. *sigh*
Shrek.
Since buggering up his chances with Princess Elena, Arthur is ordered by Uther to go and rescue another princess [either for himself or for Uther - not sure] who is apparently being kept prisoner by… her own parents. Anyway, she lives in the smallest room in the tallest tower of a castle that stands on an island surrounded by a boiling lake of lava. Apparently there’s some sort of monster guarding her which sees off suitors, but Arthur isn’t troubled by such piffling details. So off he and Merlin trot. They rescue the princess, deal with the dragon [thanks Merlin] and bring the Princess Fiona back to her parents. On the way, they encounter a band of really annoying hose-wearing sylvanian brigands, discover the reason behind Princess Fiona’s incarceration and foil yet another potentially disastrous wedding. Also, there is a talking donkey. possibly arthur
Hocus Pocus.
This one I'm just mentioning because it's that time of the year, lol, but I was rewatching it t'other night and thought Winnifred would have a WICKED time if she ever hit Camelot. Also, there's that creepy magic book w/ the eye that could totally be Merlin's. The awesome!awesome scene where Bette Middler sing 'I Put A Spell On You' to enchant the party-goers to 'dance, dance, dance until you dieeee! ahahahahaha!' put me RIGHT in mind of Lady Helen, aaall the way back in episode one. Plus, the scenes where the kids try to convince everyone in town that there are actually-actual-witches trying to kill their children are SO like all those times Merlin's cried 'magic!' and everyone else has cried 'Don't be such a tit, Merlin.' [Apparently no one learns, in Camelot, so it's not unlikely that an evil-witch-woman could enchant its people with her singing, TWICE.] Also, I was thinking you could mash this up with Coraline since they both have awesome talking!black!cats in them. [Yes, that's what passes for logic in my brain. Moving on.]
And lastly, since this one would have to be epic!:
His Dark Materials.
A Philip Pullman-crossover!
Seriously, this is such a massive idea I don't even know where you'd start.
[But there're quite a few little bits that would tally so beautifully if you could pull it off; the Gallivespians, for example, could be the Sidhe!]
I reckon it'd have to be a crossover of Northern Lights and The Subtle Knife to begin with, since you'd obviously have to have both boys in there from the beginning - that's if, as I was assuming, you'd have one boy play the role of Lyra, and the other the role of Will. Off the top of my head I was thinking, albeit moronically, that I'd go by hair-colour and make Arthur Lyra and Merlin Will [just because he could so pull off the cutting-holes-into-new-worlds thing and also there are parallels between Merlin and Will's search for his father. Balinor = Jo.]
What got me initially fantasy!geek-spazzing about this idea was the thought of Merlin and Arthur having dæmons >< because, zomg, can you imagine??
[I'm a sucker for anything overtly fantasy so the idea was just so pleasing to me.]
I was wondering what they'd be!
At first I thought Merlin's would be a dragon, before I realised that, mm, maybe Merlin's would be like a small bird of prey? Deceptively small but efficient? A Merlin, perchance?! [I'm such a tit. ¬_¬] Then again, the boys' dæmons might not be fixed yet [in my mind, probably for slashy reasons involving unpopped cherries >:D.]
Oh, FYI: Arthur's dæmon would be a horse.
I've decided.
A big loverly horse.
And at some point he and Merlin would have to ride his dæmon and the UST would be ridiculous. ><
Anywho, the reason I thought of Arthur being in Lyra's place was because that would mean he could read the alethiometer, and imagine all the questions he could ask! [I was imagining Merlin losing his rag and telling Arthur what exactly questions he should ask. Like: who is his most loyal servant? How many times has Merlin saved his life?!]
So, yes, when squeezed through the mangle of my brain, a potentially fantastic idea becomes an excuse for bad porn, but you get the picture. [Thinking about it, If I find out someone's already thought of/written this one I'm going to feel such a fool! ^_^' But I still enjoy rambling about these things.]
Anyway...
Consider the rambling finished, at least for now. This has been my fanfic!blabla - you''ve been wonderful, I've been fantastic - thank you, good night, and I love you all! *throws out arms like hollywood starlet*
