Oh, wow. What an awful day.
First my bro's girlfriend Kristie found out that she's getting two thousand pounds less than she expected, and that she needs. Her mother is a disgrace, the way she utterly fails to support her child, to even provide any sympathy (you knew this was going to happen, she said, why don't you just not go she said. To university? Her whole future? Bitch!)
And my mum had to make about 90 phonecalls on her behalf, trying to wrangle more money for her. We've basically come to the conclusion that if it becomes necessary, we'll support her [mum said she'd rather support her than a starving child in Africa, lol] which is awkward, because we don't know how close she and Huw will be, when all this is happening, how much we should invest ourselves. But mum also said she'd look our for her whether she and Huw stuck together or not. It's struck me more and more, the more families I come across which aren't as unconditionally tight as my own, that what most people need, at some points in their life, is to have someone on their side.
...And then Dad and I went to see my grandmother in hospital, and-
I've never seen anyone like that before, least of all her. It was very upsetting.
On the way back I did such a Winchester thing, too. I thought 'how do I stop Dad breaking down before we get back?' because I knew he wouldn't want to be seen to do so. So I started asking him questions about cars, about spark plus and carburettors and fuel-injection, and if you knew me you'd know that that is so totally uncharacteristic and out-of-the blue for me. But it sparked his interest, because he's deeply into engineering and physics so he talked all the way home, and when we got in he took me to the garage and showed me all the components he'd been speaking of. And it was okay.
When mum got back from work, he told her 'she [muggins 'ere] is giving up all this English crap and taking on Mech-En, Mechanical Engineering.' Now we're watching an old Poirot rerun and Dad keeps breaking out into tangents to me, about engineering and cars. He said my analogy of etymology was yes, very apt - that knowing the fundamental principles behind engine components is like knowing Etymology. That you could look at a word and think 'fuck, I haven't got a clue what that means - but, that bit's from the Latin. . . blabla . . . and then you can figure out what it means.'
The other night we, all four of us, had this looong long talk in which we covered everything - politics, philosophy, Shakespeare, poetry, opera. It was fantastic. :D
Y-eah, I know. It's like that in my house.
In the meantime, I'm making MetallicaRt and wishing my house didn't feel so gutted these days . . .
