tonight, brian and i decided to ride down to the la cornfields for a nice long bike ride. most days, my biking just consists of commutes to and from worth. the night was clear, the air was a little brisk, and neither of us had worthwhile plans. we rode out to the cornfields, biking through a dark and somewhat vacant downtown. i escaped near death (some schmuck decided to open his door without looking to see if anyone was around). we arrived at the cornfields only to find that they were closed. on the way back, brian got a flat. it was really odd too. i thought at first that a piece of rope got caught around the gears. upon closer inspection, it was actually the tube that had torn and was now tied in confusing knots, no sailor could even tie. we then decided to take the metro back towards my house. i swear, only strange people use public transportation at night. i don't even want to get into the details of what i saw tonight. upon serious retrospection, it makes me a little ill. we took a nice ride on the metro, bikes in hand, and headed home a little bit defeated but full of spirit.
i have to say that biking has definitely opened my eyes to the more organic los angeles. every morning, i pass a small group of women selling blankets and clothes at the same corner, and i see how they stare at me as i ride by. i love passing by these large trucks and catching the faint yet sweet odor of the bread, ready to be delivered to the mexican bakeries. on my ride home, i get the chance to overhear conversations between families and occasionaly see a few of my students walking down the street. not counting the horrible drivers, los angeles is definitely growing on me, in a good way. there's so much culture around me. it's hard to pay attention to it when you are trapped inside a car. it escapes me why i never thought about doing this before.
