From what I've read on one of the artist's dA posts, the trolls were all drawn by various artists (each one picked their favorite to do portraits for). also, the portraits originally weren't planned, but got added because everyone loved the idea. the artist described them as similar to disgaea!
i'm fairly sure there's a difference between "a team of artists collaborating" and "various artists drawing their favorites and throwing shit together". only the latter would be relevant for explaining why a certain character looks weird.
