Sadly after 12 years with this company (and just over 20 year’s experience), I have to look for employment elsewhere as it's been made apparent that I'll not be advancing here at this plant. They have chosen to advance 4 coworkers (cutting my pay in the meantime) who have neither done, nor know as much as I do, and only one has seniority over me. ( Read more... )

I feel you, Ernie. Been there. You're right-it's time to move on. I've found it very useful to think of companies as sociopaths. You may get what you want from them sometimes or even often. They'll say what you want to hear. But they'll turn on you in an instant, without a second thought or a bit of regret. The fact that you were the guy to point out management's flaws, no matter how carefully you did it or how useful the information, pretty much sealed it. Companies say they want that information. They don't. I think you can really only challenge the status quo if you're an owner. So yeah, the less capable, less thoughtful move up. And you move on. But change like this is almost always for the better. Craft a better situation for yourself. You've got the talent and the smarts.

So true. I actaully thought I would retire here, that's how great it used to be up until a month ago when the truth came out.

If you're like me, you might be inclined to bitterness. I still harbor some, and it's been 10 years. But it has softened, and it only really hurts me. Most important: the arrow of time points in one direction. Direct your attention accordingly. Move forward. It'll be okay. Probably even great.

I'm not at all a negative person, that's why this is strange for me. But I don't see ever being able to just sit back and watch unqualified idiots move on to better things while I stay stagnant.

Understood. But you're not sitting back or staying stagnant. You're moving on to better things.

Good point. I hope that's the case. :)

It will be the case because you'll make it so. I suggest a shift in thinking as you move forward: whether you sign on with another corporation or do something on your own, always, always know that you are, from here forward, working for yourself. Establish your needs and priorities and requirements. If a company can fulfill them, great - sign on. But always be looking out for your own interests, managing your career, your resume, evaluating the situation, laying out your own path. Because you now know that NO company is going to do that for you, even if they want you to believe they will.

You're a smart and powerful guy.

Oh I agree and am aware of all this. I was thinking in this economy if there is something out there soon enough for me. :) But very well said. You really should be a motivational speaker, you're really good at this!

Good grief. That's a story I'd like to hear over a bottle of wine. I can't even imagine how something like this can happen. :(
