I'm hearing quite a few people saying they're not going to vote tomorrow because they don't like either candidate. That brings to mind Louisiana's gubernatorial election some years back . . . David Duke vs. Edwin Edwards.
My mom called me the evening before the election to let me know that she had decided not to vote for governor. The people of Louisiana had experienced Edwards as governor, and knew he was a crook. Hell, he'd been caught embezzling state funds to pay off his gambling debts. She certainly didn't want the infamous white supremest David Duke as governor. So, she just wasn't going to vote for governor. I tried to explain to her that she shouldn't just throw her vote away . . . that she should vote for the lesser of two evils. She said she'd think about it. Anyone who knew my mom knows that when she says she'll think about it, what she actually means is she's made up her mind and doesn't want to discuss it. At times she could be a very stubborn Cajun woman. So, we changed the topic of discussion to family.
The next evening, she again called me. Having just spoken with her the night before, I thought there might be a sudden illness in the family. No, she'd called to let me know that when she entered the voting booth that morning, my words came back to her . . . lesser of two evils. She then proceeded to pull the Edwin Edwards lever.
Moral: Don't waste your vote.
ETA: It took John and me about ten minutes to vote . . . no line. It was the first time we've ever voted by paper ballot. We filled in the ovals (with a black felt pen) to the left of the candidate of our choice.
