When Toby entered the area outside the Oval Office, he was met by Charlie.
“Hey, Toby. Are the kids all settled?” Charlie asked.
“They're happy as clams watching movies when they know they're
supposed to be at school,” Toby said. “So what did I miss around
here?”
Charlie had a strange expression on his face, but then, Toby figured
they were all walking around with strange expressions today.
“Well - uh - the President wants you to go right in,” Charlie answered.
Toby shrugged. “Okay.” He figured they were working on the speech again.
When Toby entered the Oval Office, the scene inside made him wonder if
he had finally just lost his mind for good. The President - and just
the fact that one of his best friends was suddenly president was
surreal enough as it was - but the President was sitting behind his
desk holding a baby as though it were the most normal thing in the
world as he met with - God, with Andrea.
Toby cleared his throat to announce his presence. Josh looked up.
“Toby! You're back. Good.”
“This new advisor of yours is a little young, don't you think?” Toby
asked with a nod at the baby.
“What?” Josh looked down at Leo as though he'd forgotten he was there.
Leo grinned up at him and snuggled closer, and Josh instinctively
tightened his arm around the little boy.
“I assume this is Donna's son?”
“Yes, this is Leo.”
“And he's . . . in the Oval Office?”
Josh shrugged. “Donna's not back yet, and Danny and the agents
couldn't get him to stop crying.”
“And you're, what, the Baby Whisperer now?” Toby demanded.
“Apparently.”
“He's a natural,” Andie proclaimed. “Hello, Toby.”
“Yes, uh - hello, Andrea,” Toby said. “The kids are up in the
Residence watching a movie.”
Andrea nodded, looking slightly shellshocked. “I'll go see them in a
minute. But that's actually not why I'm here.”
“It's not?” Toby looked from his ex-wife to the President in confusion.
“She's here because I want to make her . . .” Josh trailed off,
seemingly lost in thought. “Wait, what on earth are we going to CALL
you?”
“I don't really think that's our biggest concern right now,” Andie said gently.
“I have no earthly idea what's going on right now,” Toby announced in
frustration. “So if someone would like to enlighten me . . .”
“I just asked Senator Wyatt to serve as vice president,” Josh said.
“You . . . you . . .” For once, Toby discovered he had no words. He
turned to Andrea. “And what did you say?”
She looked surprised and a little hurt. “I told the President that I
had to talk to you before I accepted, of course.”
Toby sighed. “Fine. Let's go talk.”
