"You're sure this is okay?" Donna asked as they got out of the car at the airport.
"For the five hundredth time, yes." Josh struggled to keep the impatience out of his voice. No, he wasn't sure, not at all. He didn't know what he was going to do without her, even just for a few days. But he was trying to do a nice thing here, so she should just let him go ahead and do it.
Josh grabbed Donna's overnight bag from the back seat. "Do you want me to park and walk in with you?" he asked.
"No, I'm okay. Thanks." She just looked at him for a minute. "Thank you for this. I still can't believe it."
"You're welcome. You deserve it." Josh knew that Donna had never been away from her family this long before, and her increasingly frequent phone conversations with her mother suggested that she was getting homesick. So Josh had decided that what Donna needed for her birthday - even though it was only a few weeks before the election - was a quick trip home.
He had given her the plane tickets about a week ago, and she had been so shocked that Josh immediately started wondering whether he really came across as such a bad guy that a gesture like this would be so surprising. Or was it too big a gift for him to be giving his assistant? But she wasn't just an assistant. She wasn't like any assistant he'd had before, at least. She was more of a friend - or something. Wasn't she?
Josh handed her the bag and she slung it over her shoulder. "Have fun."
"Thank you. Really."
"But not too much fun," he said quickly.
"What?"
"Come back to me." Josh heard his voice break. "Promise?"
"I promise." Donna threw her arms around his neck, for once not caring whether it was inappropriate.
"Good." Josh quickly brushed her lips with his and then took a step back.
"But - " Donna stared at him in confusion.
Josh just grinned at her. "Go catch your plane. We'll talk when you get back."
