Then end of October put me at 24,683 words written for 'the book.'
This is only half what I scheduled myself, but October felt very much like a transition in my life. And just like when I'm writing transition scenes, they can be a real hassle to get through.
On the negative side, I didn't even write the first week as I dealt with my new living circumstances and had to find a new home for the cats. Then when Barr died, I think I spent more time that week crying than writing. Other than that, the biggest issue was figuring out just how much I had to do and when, as I worked it around my other jobs. In the end I finally just had to except that I really wasn't going to write after a day a hauling rocks or the such like.
On the positive side, Laz has wonderfully agreed to help me edit this book with no upfront charge. Actually, she told me she's all for doing it pro bono, but if this book works out I'm bound and determined she'll get a lot more than just a thank you card a box of chocolates from me. I've done a fair bit of research now into what it'll actually take for me to get this thing published, and decided how I want to go about doing it. That in itself relieved a lot of nervousness for me. And it was cool to learn that agents work for a percentage of the royalties without an upfront fee. I've been expecting to need a thousand or so just to hire the agent. Nice, eh? As the month closed, I think I can say things have settled down to more of an acceptable pattern in my life.
Everyone tells me the hardest part of any project is 'getting started.' In my case, I think that's very true. There's a great deal of struggle that happens as I play around with the story ideas and the character personas, but now they feel so much more fleshed out. I had to scrap half the rough outline I made for the book at the beginning of the month, but since it's still heading in generally the same direction I'm less worried about having the outline detailed anymore.
Yessirie! I have a feeling this month will be much better than the last. And to all those doing NaNoWriMo, good luck on your own projects! :D
