Giving up your seat on the bus for someone who needs it.

Making an extra sandwich and giving it to the homeless guy at the end of your street.

Saying "thank you," definitely.

Donating food - plenty of grocery stores have donation boxes right there for local charities. (I don't know if they do where you live.)

Patronizing small, family businesses. (This could be argued, but I think it's healthy for the community and helpful for those local people.)

Giving change to someone who needs it at the store. (You know, "Oh shoot, I don't have enough change." "Here, will this help?")

Holding doors for people. Not in the old-fashioned way, but if you see someone coming, wait and don't let the door shut in their face.

Giving old books and clothing to a shelter/Goodwill/Salvation Army, etc. rather than throwing them away. A lot of times they'll even pick up your stuff. It doesn't have to be a big task: keep a box in your basement/garage specifically for this purpose. Whenever you come across something you no longer want, toss it in. When the box is full, donate it.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Good luck!
