[245] First Memories

Aug 25, 2008 18:31

“Are you ready, Helena?” My mother poked her head around the corner as I finished my breakfast.

“Almost, Mama.” I shoveled another forkful of eggs into my mouth, and then announced, “Done!”

“Good girl.” She squeezed my shoulder. “Go brush your teeth, and then tell Daddy you’re ready.”

“Okay, Mama!” I scrambled down from my chair, compliant.

I studied my reflection as I brushed my teeth. My brand new clothes felt stiff and awkward, and yet, I was proud of my appearance. I was ready to go.

“Daddy . . .” I padded into my father’s study. “Mommy said to tell you I’m ready to go.”

“Is that so?” he asked, and turned around from his computer screen. “Well, look at you, kiddo!” he exclaimed, beaming. “My baby girl’s all grown up!” He stood, and came over to hug me. “I’m proud of you, Helena.”

“Thank you, Daddy.” I whispered against his chest, buried as I was in his embrace.

“You’re gonna knock ‘em dead, kiddo,” he said, and ruffled my hair. “Go get ‘em.”
