part i.
Character name: Nuala ní Balor, Airgetsnáithe, Princess of Bethmoora.
Fandom: Hellboy II: The Golden Army
Species: Fae demi-goddess.
Character powers: General fae powers and an extraordinarily long life-span - here are some details:
❖ Powerful, accomplished psychic. The short version is that she can play a mind like an instrument or smash it like a rockstar's guitar.
❖ Gifted enchantress. She specializes in spinning silver into enchanted threads, which are then used for sewing or weaving spells into fabric, etc.
❖ Fae glamour.
❖ Teleportation / shadow travel / traveling between planes etc.
❖ Accelerated healing.
❖ MYTHIC BOSSINESS. Not an actual power, but the Bethmoora clan are an important, nigh on mythic (within their own contexts) race and they are accustomed to commanding a certain level of inherent respect and obedience.
❖ Immune to extreme temperatures.
❖ Old school political acumen is not a power, but it should be.
❖ Psychic, spiritual and physical connection to her brother; this is also something of a weakness, since harming one harms the other.
❖ Her mother was the goddess Brighid and she is the granddaughter of the Dagda; Nuala can be particularly associated with her mother's association with fire and poetry, having something of an affinity for both in various ways.
❖ That does make her sort of a demi-goddess, yes, which is cool.
❖ Only plain wrought iron weapons will scar her.
part ii.
1.) Is it acceptable for your character to be mind-controlled or persuaded? How susceptible are they to mind control, hypnotism, or suggestion?
She's not susceptible at all; short of an actual god making the attempt, she's almost certainly going to a) notice, b) prevent it and c) be very unamused.
2.) Is it acceptable for your character to have their mind read? Does this include traumatic memories? What is their mind like (disturbing, orderly, joyful, surprisingly empty, etc.)? If the character has psychic walls or preventative measures against psychic interference, please explain.
While Nuala is capable of very thorough psychic walls and her abilities as a psychic are kind of insane, she is a princess and a child of a goddess. In essence, she is not accustomed to anyone having the temerity to try and she's still getting into the habit of remembering to shield herself at all; she's more likely to accidentally overwhelm someone sensitive with the sheer force of her presence.
SO, the short version is: yes, you can read her mind the first time, but if she doesn't like it, she'll eject you pretty damn fast and the second shot won't be free.
3.) Are thoughts mentioned in narration acceptable for a telepath to pick up?
Ye-es, provided we've discussed it OOCly to make sure we're on the same page first.
4.) What about emotions, in the case of an empath? What sort of general emotional reading would such a character receive from yours?
The fae are kind of intense in the emotion department - an empath would be able to observe the vast chasm between 'Nuala as she presents herself' and 'Nuala as she is within'. To say she's more tempestuous than she seems is a profound understatement of the case - her self-control is ridiculous, but underneath that, she's pretty much an emotional three year old, moodswinging at the drop of a hat. She can be a rollercoaster of emotion in the span of fifteen minutes, without actually showing a great deal of what's going on inside her. Flares of emotion and then almost immediate shifts in mood aren't unusual. She projects an image of serenity that isn't accurate.
5.) Are there any aspects of your character's mind, emotions, or memories you would like to be picked up, mentioned, or used in character? Conversely, is there anything that should not be noticed, or at least never mentioned?
Nuala is condemned to death by proxy (Nuada is the one condemned, but whither go one...), and intends to carry out her own execution (martyring herself and taking her brother with her) if she can't talk her brother down from the genocide ledge. She hasn't made this common knowledge and she would not like very much for it to become common knowledge. She would very much like to know if someone becomes aware, if only to stress the importance of keeping it to themselves.
part iii.
1.) Physically speaking, what stands out about your character? Imposing size? Physical scarring? Tattoos?
Nuala is 5'11" with golden eyes and blonde hair - white into gold, probably age-related, but her exact age (of around five or six thousand years old) is indeterminate. Her skin is pure white, with gold colouring around her eyes (natural) and, additionally, naturally gold finger- and toe-nails. Her ears taper to a point, frequently but not always hidden by her hair, and she appears physically to be somewhere in her twenties with a willowy build. Facial scarring crosses under her eyes and over the bridge of her nose, echoing the scarification her brother underwent as a coming of age ritual. She has further scars hidden by her clothing, most of which are, again, originating with her brother.
2.) Is your character immune to any of the following: poisons, chemical agents, telekinetic influence, radiation, or types of illnesses?
She's immune to extreme temperatures, though her clothing likely isn't.
3.) Is your character physiologically different from a human in any way? This can include their blood, skin, hair, et cetera being made up of something unusual or simply differing in construction and durability.
She is indeed physiologically quite different! As an elf and as the daughter of Brighid, she's humanoid in build, but basically made of magic.
4.) Are you amenable to having your character be harmed in any way? How far are you comfortable with injury to you character going? Does this include being fed on by vampires, willingly or unwillingly?
She may, at some point, consent to share her blood with a vampire of her acquaintance; I'd probably prefer to avoid having any of them force the issue. Otherwise, yes, I am totally down to injure her if the opportunity arises! No character death, please, she's got one lined up for herself down the track.
5.) Is it acceptable for other characters with abilities of shapeshifting or disguise to imitate your character? Does this include ability mimicry?
Appearance mimicry is a-ok, but I think it would be difficult (incredibly difficult) to accurately mimic her abilities or the sense of her presence.
part iv.
1.) Can your character's presence or aura be noticed by other characters, and how would it look/feel to them? How would it manifest to a character with no supernatural abilities, if at all?
Yes, it can! Whether a character without supernatural ability is at all sensitive to her ~presence~ is absolutely up to the typist of that character; an argument can be made in both directions and I don't mind whichever they prefer to go with for their own characterisation. A character who is sensitive will probably notice it almost immediately (I'll double-check if there's any handshaking going on, for the aforementioned 'bitch doesn't shield anything' reason - if she gets the impression she should shield for their safety, she can and will). Essentially, Nuala is ancient, powerful, and the overall impression is molten gold. It's very lovely, and it's very dangerous, but for the most part, benevolently warm rather than, uh, horrible burning death. The observant may note that the potential for horrible burning death is indeed there. She's a faerie, what can I say. They're kind of fucked up.
2.) Can your character be affected by magic spells and curses?
It depends on the spell, curse, and the ability and power of the caster. Generally, "yes", but we'd definitely have to discuss it annnnd she'd respond if she were interfered with without her consent. She's one of the leaders of Hellsing, girl's got resources.
3.) Can your character be affected by sin and corruption, and be tempted toward expressing their darker urges (of whatever flavor)?
Yes! Especially influence designed to corrupt magic particularly - as I said, Nuala is made of magic, so for example when she was in the city of Bete Noire, the tainting effect of that place had a much quicker and more powerful influence on her than it would a human without any power.
4. What sort of sins is the character prone toward, and how might they best be tempted, if you are interested in such an event?
Wrath would be a big one for her; Nuala goes to great lengths to try and learn from and move past her own prejudices, but she could be pushed slowly into insidious, increasingly vicious cruelty in response to perceived wrongs (or genuine wrongs that do not merit such response or could be better served some other way that she might, ordinarily, be aware of and willing to try to implement). Basically, if she were pushed towards sin, she'd get more and more LOOK AT ALL THE FUCKS I GIVE!
5.) Are you amenable to the character receiving prophetic visions, including as part of a plot?
I totally am, yes.
part v.
1. Is threadjacking allowed? Under what circumstances?
On the network, absolutely, provided it's not three hundred comments my character can't see or respond to! In logs, check first, I may have plans.
2. Is it acceptable for canonmates that are updated further than yours to inform your character of events yours has not yet experienced?
Yes. It's also acceptable for characters who have past CR with an alternate version to do the same, if that alternate version of herself was from a further point in canon. (Let's not pretend she'd be very surprised by what happens next.)
3. Are there triggering or upsetting topics you would like other characters to avoid mentioning to yours for the sake of continued comfort (racist words, homophobia, self-injury, etc.)?
OOCly, as long as I'm comfortable that you do not share or endorse the views/ideas/concepts expressed by your character or their general narrative, we're probably going to be fine. ICly, Nuala has very little patience for bigots and fools. If she feels her time is being wasted, she will respond accordingly, usually to either issue an order or an admonition before terminating the conversation.
4. Are there any additions you would like us to make to this survey?
Nope, I'm good!
