Oh no

So, I was singing this little ditty earlier:

They're dumping the slag over to the steel plant,
dumping the slag in the middle of the night,
they're dumping the slag over to the steel plant,
go back to bed, darling, everything is all right.

Then I started thinking about how funny it is that this is a parody of Peter at the Metre, which is a novelty song to start with. Then it occured to me that some of the New Nova Scotians and some of the Temporary Nova Scotians out there might not know Peter at the Metre, which is a shame, since it is on a level with Farewll to Nova Scotia and Barrett's Privateers as a classic.

To my chagrin, I don't know all the lyrics, but neither, it would seem, does the internet. Here's what I can recall:

I came into Sydney with a load of wood,
parked my horse on Charlotte Street to buy some goods.
Tied her to a pole that was standing there,
when an ossifer came up to me and he did blare:

Put a penny in the parking metre,
Put a nickel if you're gonna stay late,
Put a penny in the parking metre,
If you don't pay we will see the magistrate.

Funny thing: I once performed this song in a 4-H variety show in Truro. As part of a group, I hasten to add.

P.S. L-A, the fact that I was singing this song about slag is in no way related to the fact that it is your birthday! Ha, oh, I wish I were as funny as I think I am. Happy Birthday!
