Warning: Rant ahead.

Skip if you'd like.

This rant is over this article, on the proposed amendment banning same-sex marriages in the US. All of this is my opinion, and I'm warning you now--I am very opinionated. So don't whine at me if you don't agree, m'kay? :D

What. The. HELL.

If that amendment passes, then we've got solid proof that the United States is falling apart, shaking from its very foundations. The US was born for freedom--it relies on freedom. Discrimination is not supposed to be a part of it--everybody is considered an individual and is entitled to the same rights. When did it change that only straight people are entitled to marriage? Why not make it so that only people who speak fluent Spanish are the only ones allowed to marry? How about only people over the age of forty-two? Ooh! I know! Why don't we make it so that only people working in the government are allowed marrying? :D That'll work well and won't cause a stir with anyone, will it?

Get a grip, government. The Constitution wasn't written for you to change to suit your own fancies. It was written to protect us, the people. It was written so that no-one could try to tell us that only a certain type of people are allowed to do something. In fact, the Constitution holds laws against that--you may not discriminate against minorities. Blacks, whites, women, men, Hispanics, Asian, African--no. Ring any bells? 'We hold these truths to be self-evident--that all men are created equal...' How about that?

'We hold these truths to be self-evident--that all men are created equal.'

That, my dear government, would mean all men. Not just straight ones. So--where do you find that you can change the very foundations of our country to suit what you think?

I'm even ready to tread into dangerous ground (like I haven't done that already...) and say this: Separation of church and state. But hey--you wanna bring religion into this? Let's bring religion into this.

I, myself, am religious, yes. I attend a Methodist church, am part of its youth group, and part of a puppet ministry. However--this doesn't mean I think gays should be refused the same rights of marriage as a man and woman. If it's love, it's love--respect it. They may not have the same religion--they may not believe in a god, period. But that's their decision--I respect it. I applaud it! Religious freedom--the freedom to believe in whatever gods you believe in--or the freedom to choose not to believe in a god. That's the United States.

Amendment I: 'Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.'

It's in writing--you can't tell people they have to believe in a certain religion. Subsquently, you can't make any of your decisions based on your religion, for the simple reason that others may not share your religion. Thus, we leave it out of our laws. Deal with it.

On another religious note, let's take a look at the Bible. Leviticus, 20:13. If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. But what else is condemned?

Leviticus, 19:27. Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard. Shaving. But, ah... I certainly see some clean-shaven middle-aged men. Ouch.

Leviticus, 19:28. Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you. No tattoos. Oooh, better shut down those parlours, mm?

Leviticus, 21:13-14. And he shall take a wife in her virginity. 14 A widow, or a divorced woman, or profane, or a harlot, these shall he not take: but he shall take a virgin of his own people to wife. So you have to have a virgin as a wife--I guess most marriages in America must cease and desist, hmm? If your husband dies? Forget it, you're done--if you don't like the guy you get married to? HAH! You're stuck!

And there's more. There are several icons and far better discussions of Leviticus than what I have procured here--I'll add links to this later.

However, here is a rather interesting page on the subject of Leviticus...

And most of all, remember this--the Bible was a manmade work. I will not say that the ideas and occurances within did not actually happen--I will only say that within every piece of writing, there is a bias. Furthermore, the English is a translated version, adding another bias to the mix. Think about the way the Bible is biased before attempting to use it as an argument.

But basically? Stuff it. Same-sex marriages will not hurt you, and you have no right to try and forbid them in the United States of America. The Constitution has laid it out itself: You have as much freedom as you want--until you begin infringing on another person's rights. This amendment would do just that, I'd say.

*sits back* I'm expecting flames now. >.> Especially as I don't plan on locking this post.

Just my opinion.
