So, today my mum called. I called her "mum" and she said, "You're so Australian."
Anyway, she told me that my grandmother is in the hospital again. Grandma had pneumonia for a while, and just after Christmas she had a coughing fit so bad she actually had a heart attack. The ambulance took her to the hospital then came back for Grandpa because they were pretty sure Grandma wouldn't make it through the night.
She's on a breathing apparatus right now and is heavily sedated. In the morning (5 am Missouri time, I don't even know when that is in Aussie time anymore) she will be taken off the sedation and then they are going to evaluate whether or not to turn off her breathing machine.
I may have to come back to the US very shortly.
Right now I don't think it's really sunk in. I'm worried of course but it feels so far away, so remote, and I feel like I can't do anything about it. I kind of did think, after the Cardinals won the World Series this year, "well, now Grandma can let go", as we used to joke (and Grandma was in on it) that she couldn't die until she'd seen the team go all the way once more. *wince*
I'll keep you all posted, because if I do come back I will definitely want to see you all again, and will probably need some friendly company under the circumstances. It might end up being a very expensive road-trippy type trip. Would anyone be up for that (I don't have a licence anymore but I could probably get my old licence renewed fairly easily)?
