Everything Old is New Again
Ah, the start of a new week. Today’s lunchtime news chum brings together a collection of articles all related to something old being revisited in some way, shape, or form:
- Old Cars, Reborn. An interesting article in the Daily News about a car manufacturer in Chatsworth CA who is expanding. This manufacturer crafts custom vehicles on modern platforms, and then wraps them in vintage car bodies such as Willys Jeeps, Toyota Land Cruisers and Ford Broncos. He manufactures in Southern California and uses Southern California suppliers because of local incentives and the quality of the local work.
- Do You Swallow? An interesting article in the LA Times looks at the attempts of Mission San Juan Capistrano to encourage the swallows to return to nesting at the church. The most recent trick is a speaker hooked to an iPod, tucked away in the bushes behind a statue of the mission’s founder, Fray Junipero Serra, that plays a recording of the swallow’s mating call on a continuous loop, up to six hours a day five days a week.
- Riding the Subway. No, not the current one. An interesting photo-tour of the current state of the Pacific Electric Subway Terminal Building. I still remember when Ralph Story did such a tour in the 1980s.
- Outing the Outlet. Many years ago, there was a JC Penny Outlet store in Fallbrook Plaza. I think it is long gone, but there was an interesting article in the St. Louis paper about a JC Penny Outlet in a mall there. It appears JC Penny dropped the business, the management took it independent (but retained a close relationship to JCP) and has reopened it as JC Five-Star Outlet. I wonder if this will happen to the outlet at Ontario Mills?
