Cet obscur objet du désir (Luis Buñuel, 1977)

Mathieu is a wealthy french businessman who falls desparately in love with his maid Conchita. As he desparately pursues her she pulls away from him. The whole film centers on his inability to sleep with her. Throughout the film she switches from acting as though she's obsessivly in love with him to utterly humiliating him. She's not after his money but as he chases after her and falls more madly in love she seems to fall further and further away.

After he endures the ultimate humliation you are positive that he will never return to her. But when they are reunited after a train ride that bookends the film (flashback style) it is not surprising that he and her enter a taxi together.

But when they stepped off that train - waaaay before the voice-over broadcast started - I knew exactly how it was going to end. There was really no other way for it to end.

They were both blown up by terrorists, obviously. And by which terrorits you ask? The flippin' Revolutionary Army of the Baby Jesus!!

I'm serious.

I think I'm done with Buñuel for awhile.
