Midnight in Paris (Woody Allen, 2011)

I said I wished living in Ottawa when a new Woody Allen film would net about 3 other moviegoers. This one was sold out the afternoon of it's opening weekend. All showings, bad reviews be damned. The following week - for the first time ever for a non-festival show - I went online and purchased advanced tickets the day of. And I still ended up stuck in the front row.

It was comforting to see the black screen, the white titles, and the endless Parisian establishing shots. Unfortunately there's an awful part of my brain that keeps comparing Allen's current film to all similar themed things he's done before. I kept thinking about films with supernatural themes (Alice, Purple Rose of Cairo, etc) and decided that this was an inferior re-tread. Still comforting. I'm happy as long as there are new Woody Allen films to see. And Corey Stoll was funny as Hemmingway.
