At first glance, Agatsuma Soubi wants you to believe he's your average 20-year old university student. A Japanese Arts major, Soubi can often be found painting late into the evenings (often the very night before a deadline) pieces featuring the most exquisite butterflies - creatures which he holds a rather curious obsession with. Tall, blonde and extremely handsome, there is a mysterious air about Soubi who, despite his rather pleasant nature and effortlessly smooth and flirtatious manner, seems to mask a deep, constant and underlying pain. When his trusted and most loyal friend Kaidou Kio asked him why he liked butterflies so much, Soubi responded that they actually disgusted him - as much for their effortless beauty as the ease in which they are caught. This ominous reply, ironically, only enhances his already alluring character.
For Agatsuma Soubi really isn't anything like your normal, average university student. Formerly of the legendary fighting pair Beloved and now of Loveless, Soubi's name has long been notorious in the realm of Fighters and Sacrifices. Having endured intense physical and psychological Fighter training as a boy under the "sensei" Ritsu, Soubi was - as Aoyagi Seimei’s counterpart in the team Beloved - widely acknowledged as the perfect Fighter.

Though very strong physically and magically, brilliant in battle tactics and a master weaver of words, what truly made Soubi perfect was his complete and utter lack of a sense of self. It was Soubi's belief that as a Fighter, he lived solely to serve and protect his Sacrifice, Aoyagi Seimei. Unforgiving in battle, Soubi formed the most eloquent of counter-attacks that often twisted his opponent’s spells against them. His only concern was the well being of his Sacrifice and the execution of his commands, regardless of the severity of the damage it would inflict on their opponents and least of all on himself.

Upon meeting Aoyagi Ritsuka, Soubi’s behavior as a Fighter slowly begins to change. Unlike Seimei, Ritsuka rejects the idea of controlling Soubi ‘like a dog.’ Add to this his inexperience, and it results in Soubi - perhaps for the first time - being forced to make his own decisions. Though his unconditional desire to protect his Sacrifice and apathetic response to self-injury never wavers, Ritsuka’s refusal to play the role of master to Soubi’s servant causes him to become a little more independent with each passing day. He begins to enter battles without a Sacrifice - much to the displeasure of his opponents and of Ritsuka. When ordered not to do so again, Ritsuka being unwilling to let the older man get hurt on his behalf, Soubi does what would have been unthinkable while he was Beloved and disobeys. Because in Ritsuka’s eyes, Soubi is much more than his Fighter and rather frustrating ‘love interest.’ To Ritsuka, Soubi is a man of endless secrets who, despite his easy smile, seems to be in constant pain. Having also been put under strict orders never to reveal anything about his past with Beloved (though perhaps more personally unwilling to), Soubi thus begins to lie, avoid and directly disobey Ritsuka to keep him from discovering the root of his pain; unwilling to burden the boy with his own broken heart and potentially 'dirty' him too.
This forced distance, however, only heightens the boy’s displeasure and emotional turmoil. Yet despite his frustration, Ritsuka continues to refuse any physical punishment on his increasingly free-thinking and disobedient Fighter, even after being warned that he would be deemed unfit for Soubi if he could not properly control him. However, when they are together, there exists something between them with potential to be stronger than any shared name determined by fate. Unlike countless others who have come and gone in Soubi’s life, Ritsuka is the first to not want to own him so much as be with him. And it is perhaps this overwhelming desire to defy fate and challenge the standards of Fighter/Sacrifice relationships that Soubi has begun to change - as Kio put it - ‘from a zombie to someone human again.’
A Fighter, however, was never meant to have more than one Sacrifice for a reason. When word spreads that Soubi had not only survived Beloved’s death, but had actually appointed himself the Fighter of Seimei's younger brother who also happened to be a Sacrifice - his reputation plummets in the Fighter & Sacrifice realm. It's the dirtiest act one can commit in their world: to betray one’s given name for the sake of another.

Permanently scarred on his neck is the name Beloved crowned in thorns, forever marking him as belonging to Aoyagi Seimei. Once, when the question was raised as to who Seimei was to him, Soubi had replied that he was his god. All through life and even in death Seimei controls Soubi, who can do nothing but continue to carry out his orders to the letter. It was Seimei’s order that Soubi become Ritsuka, Loveless’ Fighter. It was Seimei’s order that he always stand by Ritsuka’s side so that he would never have to be alone. But what shocks the usually infallible Soubi is how much he’s come to genuinely care for this new Sacrifice. Ritsuka is nothing like the Sacrifice Seimei had been, and soon Soubi is overwhelmed with a desire to prove himself to the boy and please him in any way he can. Ironically, all Ritsuka wants of him is his knowledge of Seimei's murder - everything he's been ordered never to reveal. Soubi once tells Ritsuka that his commands are his law. But laws, as with all rules, can be broken. Seimei’s words, however, are absolute. Caught between his current Sacrifice and his former (who still holds a strong claim on him even after death), Soubi finds himself torn between conflicting commands and desires. With the bond between himself and Loveless growing stronger with each passing day, the moment draws ever nearer when Soubi must ultimately choose where his true loyalties lie: with Beloved, as was destined for him, or with Loveless, who potentially holds the mutual love he's been yearning for all his life.
After all, one cannot belong to two masters.
