I N S T A L L A T I O N;
So you've just
bought (or
downloaded) your copy of Umineko no Naku Koro ni, only to realize that you have no idea how to install it! Well, no worries, I've been there too and I'm more than willing to help those who are installing their first visual novel. I will be assuming that the user is using some form of Windows.
If you're one of those people who bootlegged it, you will need
DAEMON TOOLS or something similar (I have heard good things about
ALCOHOL 120% and
MAGICDISC) in order to mount the image, as well as
WINRAR in order to extract the iso.
Got all that? Then let's begin.
If your copy of the game has been split into multiple parts, make sure that you have downloaded all of the rar files and that they're in the same folder. Then open the first one up using Winrar and extract it and the file will automatically become one big ISO or MDF again.
Next you will need to change your system locale to Japanese. For XP users, there's a handy dandy tutorial
HERE if you need it. A similar tutorial for Vista users is right over
HERE. I have you covered, too, Windows 7 users! Check
HERE if you don't know how to do it.
Reboot your computer.
Next will be the actual installation of the game. If you're using the CD to install it, skip the part about using Daemon Tools. If you're a pirate, make sure Daemon is open. Left click the taskbar icon and click "
DEVICE 0: NO MEDIA" or whatever it says for you. Go to the folder with your Umineko ISO or MDF file and select it. The game's menu should open up automatically.
The menu will have three buttons. We want the
LEFT MOST BUTTON, since this is the one to install the game. The right right most button can be used to install the game. The center is used to run it.
The next screen will be the actual installer. The smaller, higher button can be used to change where the game is installed to. The default location is C:\Program Files\07th_Expansion\, but install it wherever you want, it doesn't matter. Once you've selected your folder hit the lower, bigger
BUTTON when you're ready for the installation to begin.
A bunch of screens like
THIS will begin to disappear and reappear rapidly as the game installs. They'll normally go by fairly quickly, but some will go slower. The game may lag at times, but this is normal any nothing to worry about. Do not close it until the installation has completed. If you do this you will need to delete the files that have been installed and start over.
And you're done! The menu will pop back up and you'll find that the right most button has been disabled, but the center button is now active. Click that now to open the game and ensure that it works. The game's menu should look something like
THIS.
Now we're going to get rid of the Japanese. Go to
WITCH HUNT and click on "links" to acquire their release. If you're installing episode 4, you will want the The Question Arcs (Episodes 1-4) patch. If you are installing episode 5 or 6, you will want their respective patches. If you're using the installer (I prefer not to), you can skip this next paragraph. If not, carry on.
Installing the patch is ridiculously easy. Open up your Umineko no Naku Koro ni folder and extract the "[WH] Umineko English" folder to it. DO NOT just copy the contents of the folders to the main folder, but the entire folder, as doing so will overwrite important files for the game and render it unplayable and you'll have to start all over. In the end the folder should look like
THIS.
Now all that's left to do is to run the game in english! Go to the "[WH] Umineko English" folder and click "
ONSCRIPTER-EN" to open the game to be sure that it works. DO NOT move this file, as it is important that it stays where it is. If you want a copy of it on your desktop, instead right click it and click "send to desktop (create shortcut)." The file named "icon" in it can be used to replace the ugly, default program icon.
And you're done! I hope you enjoy the game and that this tutorial wasn't too confusing. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, words of love, etc, please feel free to leave a comment here! ♥
