It doesn’t hurt anymore.
That’s the first sign that she might want to worry. Of course…she doesn’t. It’s really not in her nature to dwell on anything and in those last few moments…moments that really do and don’t last forever…She doesn’t.
They stretch and she simply feels warm, almost. But not. It’s hard to explain…..
So she doesn’t. She doesn’t have to. Not ever. After three long years this moment is hers and only hers and she loves it. She can hear someone yelling at her, screaming, ranting, screeching…
But it’s too far away to care anymore. It’s not a worry of hers even as her body drops to the floor as the man drops the front of her shirt. He used to be younger. They all used to be younger. She remembers thinking he was just a little too smart for himself, too cocky. Stupid, that coming from her…but still. It was and always would be true.
She grins, barely feeling it but knowing that she is, even if her body may or may not mimic how she feels. What matters is at least she knows she got the last laugh, she knows it, and she knows at least a few others who will know she did too. If she could regret any of it, she'd apologize for adding her name to a list that is already pages long and seems to be never ending. She'd made it longer then most of the staff...the people here...but in the end. Matt had been right. Watanuki had been right.
And that......After all these years.... That is her last laugh that makes everything, every single thing, worth it.
The yelling is growing fainter in the background. And it’s pleasant it's like a hum almost....Then it's quiet. Dark. And warm. Or perhaps something like it.
And the caged bird finally flies free.
