So, I’m waaaaaaay back in Season 9 Supernatural just watching without posting anything to try and catch up by the series finale (I’m totally not gonna make it, lol) but dammit, they are making me do a tie report.
OKAY. So, at this point in Season 9, Dean has the Mark of Cain, Crowley is addicted to humanity, Sam ‘will never forgive Dean’ and wants to just interact in a businesslike way or some crap I know is not gonna last past the end of this season. Because Winchesters *handwave*. Anyway, they’re at the crime scene where the First Blade has just been stolen by someone and there’s bodies, etc.
TIE REPORT:
I mean. LOOK AT THESE TIES. Dean - Dark blue, with tiny white dots. Sam - a kind of locked bubble matrix, dark blue lines on grey, inverse of the colour weighting of Dean’s. SERIOUSLY. (I think someone asked about the tie choices at a con or something once and they said it was just whatever looked good for the scene or something, but. But. COME ON! *gestures at screen*)
Dean is very serious, about one thing, the most essential part of his life as he sees it. Family, and his relationship with Sam. This is a painful tie to look at, particularly because while I don’t recall any spoilers at this point, he didn’t get any details about the terrible cost of the Mark of Cain before agreeing to take it on. Which, seriously, has to be something about brothers fighting, or him having to kill Sam with the damn thing to activate it, or whatever. All Dean is truly focused on is Sam, and getting his family back to the way it was. Everything else either serves or is secondary to that goal. This is a single-minded, focused, and above all immobile tie. There is no going forward or back, there is no progress or regression, there is only focus.
Sam? Sam is rigid, unyielding. He has walled off everything in him that would forgive Dean, and though there are moments it flexes, like with the Ghostfacers breakup and the ‘Batman and Superman’ childhood memory, Sam always shores that wall back up. This is not something that can be gotten past easily, and it will take a lot for them to heal this bond, and honestly, that’s the way it should be. Any easy resolution would cheapen this whole arc, and their relationship.
Whether any of this is being exacerbated by the Mark of Cain curse is actually pretty irrelevant in the overall scheme of things. This conflict comes from who they are and their entire life history.
These ties are screaming about how impossible healing between them seems right now. These are PAINFUL TIES. And so, I needed to do a tie report.
I am still watching my way through, Though I’m in season 9 still, and I won’t be caught up in time to watch the series finale live, but… Just…
Supernatural has been and will be a huge part of my life. Real life kind of stomped me flat and I set it aside, for years, but I’m still a Supernatural fan.
When all of you watch the finale, and see the final “Carry On” montage, I’ll be with you in spirit…. Aaaaaand ducking 6 seasons worth of spoilers until I get caught up and can watch it myself. XD
