getting up close to Dean Winchester and turning your eyes yellow WILL NOT HELP YOU PRESERVE YOUR NINE LIVES, DUDE! Dean and yellow eyes have a history you do not want to set off.
"...conversational trebuchet volleys to bracket the range..."
Writing like this is why I love you! But you had so many wonderful (snarky) observations in this review, I can't quote them all...I thought the ep was kinda 'meh,' but that it inspired you to write such a LOL review redeemed the whole episode!!!
And you predicted the entire plot about 1/3 of the way down--I am IMPRESSED!
Still, there's the whole 'getting duped by a demon' thing as the power source, unless James went a different way to get his witch powers, but we haven't seen much success for alternative approaches on this show, plus he's gotta be pretty far along if he's got a familiar, which so far, none of the other witches the Winchesters have encountered have had, and that seems like it was pretty darn quick if he's not taking demonic shortcuts. Duping demons are only involved when women stick their pretty little heads into witchcraft and are too stupid to ask questions. When manly men become witches demons are never mentioned and the men ask for immortality, so going to hell is way less of an issue. In a pinch, a male witch can buy immortality for his wife. Sorry, I have a thing about the way the show handles the gender issues of witchcraft
( ... )
Yeah, this episode was a real button pusher. I thought they'd had male witches before though, but I'm usually being too bothered by the handling of witchcraft and paganism as a whole to notice gender issues. :-/
Now that I know Eugenie Ross-Leming is married to Bob Singer it suddenly makes sense why these awful writers are still allowed to write for the show (and they're also producers this season. Yuck.)
I think I can honestly say I disliked this episode more than even Route 666 and The Slice Girls, which, coincidentally, they also wrote.
(And yes, the shagging scene was almost identical to the shagging scene in Route 666 wasn't it?!)
Traditionally familiars are used by newbies to protect them should they accidentally get in over their heads. So James having one while long established witches (Whathisnames the Bickersons & Life pokerguy) do not makes sense. As for Tammi's crew, they were dealing directly with a demon and obviously the demon won't want any familiars around to interfer. I suspect the bar is actually a private club and you probably need an entry to get in, such as being with a known familiar or witch. But like the killing of possessed people, SPN needs to better define their witch policies. Why do some witches get a buy, when others don't? Don't tell me the Bickersons weren't that bad - they both were prepared & did off anybody who got in their way. And as for pokerguy - you can't tell me its all the player fault for playing as what kind of nutcase do you have to be to believe his offer before you had the proof.

Witches in Supernatural are... problematic. The lore is terribly inconsistent to say the least.
