Apparently Dean did something to make a call from one of his cell phones appear to be coming from Amelia's. (Someone with lots more tech saavy than me said that elsewhere.) The key point being that it was something Dean had to do in advance, so he was prepared to get Sam out of the way when he needed to. Um, trust? Yeah, guess not...And the fact that Sam showed up to see Amelia and Don being domestic was purely a coincidence.
I think at this point the Sam/Amelia/Don story is all human, no supernatural reason after all. Which is a bit disappointing, but also kind of daring for Carver to play it that way, judging by the number of fans who are not happy with it.
Oh how Dean did the thing with Sam's phone is simple; he took Sam's phone at some point and programmed the number of a new burner phone under Amelia's name, so that if he texted from it it would read out as Amelia. At a guess, I'd say Dean did that right after Sam's outburst at the end of Southern Comfort, in case he needed to pull Sam of Benny's trail, which he did.
Don's looking more like he's probably a regular human, which is good because there are times when regular humans seem rare in Supernatural, but it's not helping explain Sam's behaviour toward hunting and Benny any much.
The boys and their trust issues, oy vey. I may have wanted to smack Sam a little with the way he handled Amelia there. The boy is clueless on all fronts lately.
Benny is cool, and kind of cuddly. In a burly cajun vampire sort of way. ^.^
I'm a lot less convinced of Benny's basic goodness than you are. We never saw Desmond kill anyone and Benny's story is weak in many ways. I do think the writers are going for Benny the Good, but I'm still not sold and I understand completely why Sam and Martin weren't sold
( ... )
The more hints there are that Benny might be evil, the more I'm convinced he's good. There is still the Alpha Vamp out lurking around, along with other vampires who might have caught word of one of their own returning from Purgatory and be sniffing around
( ... )
Well I can redeem myself. Jim Michaels who said the mid-season finale was supposed to be episode 10 has tweeted an OOPS. He misremembered the number. Episode 9 was indeed the planned season finale and these were the cliffhangers. No idea how things will start up again.
Dean is clever with Sam's phone! Who-hoo! (I'm guessing he changed Amelia's number in Sam's phone to his own spare phone number so when he texted Sam on his spare phone, it came up on Sam's phone as Amelia...???)
Bennyyyyy! Just loved that bit where he laid his head on the counter. *gulp*
I liked how the women were presented in this ep too - especially the part where Don and Sam realise they have to let Amelia decide what she wants to do, and, as you said, the calm (yet terrified) way Elizabeth dealt with the situation. (Kathleen Monroe was really good in The Kids Are Alright too!)

Yeah, I just assumed that was what he'd done so I didn't mention the details. I didn't think the technical aspects of it where that confusing, but it seems to be a more complex trick for watchers to catch than I'd thought. o.O

That's where she's from! She was so awesome in that too, with her own separate storyline practically.
1. The weird statue is a likely a souvenir from Hersey Pennsylvania - it is a hersey's kiss with a bear's head - the local minor league hockey farm team is the Hersey Bears but that might be a coincidence as bears & chocolate go way back.
2. Dean got a hold of Sam's phone and reprogrammed it to list a "burner" phone as Amelia. He was prepared to get rid of Sammy if necessary should the occasion arise. Which shows Dean knows Sam is more committed to Amelia than the job.
3. I agree with Dean that Martin had it coming. Just as Travis did with that rugaru. Lousiana seems to be where old hunters cross the line between hunting and being no better than the monsters themselves. There was no reason to drag poor Elizabeth into his hunt. What would he had done if he was wrong about Benny not attacking family? There is nothing in vampire lore to suggest vampire have a problem with it. Actually it shows how unbalanced Martin is.
2. Yep. I didn't think the technical aspects needed mentioned, but it seems I was wrong. O.o
3. Martin was off several rails before that cut away from him going to chop Benny's head off. Who knows what happened between that and him becoming a corpse except Elizabeth, who has probably given Dean enough scattered info for him to put the pieces together. Basically though, Martin went after a human and that seems to be the point of no return on this show.
