This ep caused major desire to smack them both upside the head, but Sam a little harder...
Actually, the flashbacks combined with Sam's freakout about Dean going on the vamp hunt last ep has given me some ideas re: Sam's mental state. I am coming to believe Sam really couldn't think of what to do and was reeling from the abrupt loss of Dean so he was driving aimlessly until he hit the dog. Vet lady, though out of line, gave Sam something to focus on fixing by making him take the dog. When Sam discovers Amelia's brokenness, it gives him something to 'fix' because he can't begin to repair himself. Also, her issues are familiar--drinking & depression.
When Dean returns, Sam feels guilty for having not looked for him, and also angry about feeling guilty because he was doing the best he could. Sam is also angry at Dean for abandoning him--emotions don't always make sense, but I think Sam is feeling betrayed that Dean went and 'died' on him. Witness the frantic way Sam drove to reach Dean when he was on the vamp hunt--Sam knows he couldn't handle if something happened to Dean again...
So Sam is throwing up the Benny thing as a smokescreen, but Sam, there's no way Dean keeping Benny a secret equals your decision to stop looking for Dean, even if a little necessary for your sanity.
So yeah, Sam is acting like a brat. He's doing it because he is hurting, but Sam has always turned his guilt into anger whereas Dean turns his into depression.
Why am I sure it's going to get worse before it gets better??? Sigh.
