Spoiler and Theory Summary
No spoilers! \o/
However, theories:
-Lucifer or Sam's fractured self or whatever is going to give Sam an awful time, because Sam's going to be very destabilized and upset, and whether it comes from himself or a secondary force, that's prime self-destructive hallucination time.
-Dean might go insane. Absolutely, literally insane. I'm thinking some kind of crazy "summon Death and yell at him to leave Bobby alone" insane. Or "Do some kind of soul entrapment thing and bind Bobby's ghost to something he'll be packing around with him everywhere" insane. We got a glimpse of Dean with Bobby gone earlier this season when the scrapyard got torched. Whatever Dean does at this juncture as a result of whatever condition Bobby ends up in, rationality is not likely to enter into it.
-Death may very likely show up and have words with someone. If not Dean, then... someone else.
-What the Leviathans are up to? Something. Something more.
...What's that? I didn't mention any theories relating to whether Bobby's okay or not?
How's that for a theory? :-)
In all honesty though, Bobby's been giving me 'doomed to die' vibes since Season 2 because he's in the Obi-Wan position. Obi-Wan dies. Buuut at the same time Obi-Wan kind of haunts Luke a bit and keeps showing up now and then. Not like stuff like that ever happens on this show.
Of course I hope Bobby lives. But, even if he doesn't, there's nothing to say he'll stay dead (he's an honorary Winchester now, that comes with a key to Death's revolving door) and whether by haunting, flashback or Leviathan, or what the heck, going up to Heaven and rousing the Heavenly Roadhouse with news of the crap the Leviathans are trying to pull back on Earth and petitioning Joshua for angel-hood for the lot of them (there are a lot of open positions for angels after the whole apocalypse thing and LeviaGodCas rampage killed off loads of them after all) so they can get back to Earth and smite some Leviathan butt or something, there is a good chance that we won't have seen the last of Bobby's furry mug on this show.
If he dies that is.
He's totally gonna live though. Right?
...Right?
Picspam Reaction, with speculation and randomness for Supernatural 7.10 - ??? "Death's Door."
[AFTER-WATCH RETROACTIVE NOTE: Quite a lot of my reactions to this episode were very personal for several reasons, many too personal to post online. As a result, this post will be shorter, sketchier and more subdued than usual.]
It's been a long time since I've been this nervous to hit play on an episode. Admittedly the three or four wrong episodes I hit play on first have eased the nerves a little. My sources are... confused sometimes.
-Skipping the THEN. Taking a breath. Debating alcohol.
-Damn that's a daunting 'NOW' screen.
-Bullet path. Right down in there. Owwwwwww. That's gonna... need a real big bunch of WB ointment. Yeah. *swallows* DDD-:
-Okay, I'm sure me and every other person who wrote a
'Sam does first aid in the back of the van' tag for 7.09 are feeling mildly psychic right now. Not that it was hard to predict. Damn the lighting in the van though.
-Shortest pre-title sequence ever I think. Under a minute.
-Title. "Death's Door." Oh fantastic.
-Oh hey, flashback to last episode. Three boys in the woods. *wibbles*
-Blocking the guest stars, still expecting Julian Richings though, even before I saw his character was in the title.
-No I haven't managed to make any caps yet because it was dark and then a segment from last week mostly and I'M DISTRESSED, OKAY??
-I can't even transcribe the noises I'm making. I'm quite severely attached to Bobby for many reasons. I don't know if this reaction post is going to be all that fun and funny this time guys, I'm sorry.
-Dean, even Bobby's-near-death-experience Dean, does an adorable 'confused'.
-"Numbers." Okay, yes. Leviathan plot. Thinking. 454895. Too short for a phone number or Social Security number (I think?). Divisible by 5. A YouTube user with one video uploaded, something about hot teachers for Valentine's day, (giving that a wide berth. O.o) Six numbers, could be two groups of 3 numbers, for coordinates. Hmm. *tinkers* 45.4, -89.5 gives a result of
Turtle Lake Road in Gleeson Wisconsin, which is in the same state as one of those conspicuous marks were on the Leviathan map, but further north. Hmmm...
-Oh ow. On top of ow. Bobby's wife. Ow.
-Written by Sera Gamble. Ohhhhhhh crap. We are so hosed you guys. D-:
-Directed by Robert Singer. Well there, he can't kill off Bobby, Bobby's named after him. *clings to hope*
-Moon going out, never a good sign.
-Aaaaand the rest of the world going out too, and chasing someone towards the house. Is Bobby's near-(please just near)-death experience in Fantasia? Is the Nothing coming for him? He does have a lot of books, maybe the Never-Ending Story is in there somewhere. *ponders*
-It's wee-somebody. If it's wee-somebody we know, then the memory can't be contemporary with the previous one because Bobby wasn't a hunter before his wife died. Unless he's seeing wee-himself, but he's been first person POV so far, so that'd be a little odd.
-OH MY GOD HI RUFUS!!!! \o/
-And Rufus has a fascinatingly dangly and hard to cap earring. Hunh. He's revealing hidden depths now that he's dead.
-"All right baby boy, here we go." BABY BOY!!!! I don't know whether to laugh or go Awwww. *flails regardless*
-I will go 'Ooooo' at the pretty location and shot framing, though.
-Ahh. Same kid, running blurrily. ...You know, he looks a bit like Dean did in that photo of him, Sam and John from the Pilot. Hmmm.
-SUDDEN UNANTICIPATED CHILDREN ARE SCARY! O.O
-"God's gonna punish you." Well. Thanks for that then, you little ray of sunshine. ...Dark hair... He wouldn't be.... Naw....?
-Significant and incongruous dropped glass of milk. Hmmmmm..... *ponders*
-Earthquake or inbound archangel, and the people in his memories are reacting to the earthquake-like thing.... so... Hmm. *still pondering*
-And now the background people are disappearing. I DON'T KNOW WHAT ALL THIS MEANS, BUT I LOVE TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT.
-AND I LOVE THE EFFECTS/LIGHTING DEPARTMENT FOR ACCOMPLISHING A MAJOR DOSE OF CREEPY JUST BY TURNING OFF THE LIGHTS!
-"Hello, Mr. Singer. Your time's up." Not Death, but maybe a Reaper? Or... Hm. Hang on... Tie Report! MUTANT PAISLEY. Or a variant thereof. If this guy turns out to in some bizarre way be a Leviathan, I WILL BE VERY FREAKING SMUG.
-Come to think of it, Leviathan Dick bought that pair of guns specifically. He didn't alter the bullets from purchased, but what if it's another kind of 'Special' gun? That does Leviathan *handwave* things. I DON'T KNOW, I'm improvising theories as fast as I can.
-"You're in a coma, genius, this is what happens. I climb in your custard and I fish you out." Dean's coma was a lot more in the 'now' than Bobby's. More ghost and less memory. Hm. Also, 'custard' and 'fish' in close proximity? Combined with the late lamented Amy Pond, someone on the writing staff is totally a hardcore Eleventh Doctor fan.
-"I don't even know you right now!" Oh, god, Chuck Norris movie marathon with the boys. In Bobby's un-burned-down house. Oh. *flails*
-"It's like you want him to get mad." Oh wow. Bobby's mom. And a not-too-happy account of his home life growing up. Setting that aside, the set people really did a job on the kitchen. Just look at that stand-mixer on the left side by the wall!
-And close the doors and we're back with Rufus. Love the quick memory changes, and the interweaving. Whatever the outcome, we're getting a lot of Bobby backstory tonight.
-Oh boys.
-And there's the kid again. Maybe it's not wee anyone else, maybe it really is wee!Bobby?
-"I'm not dyin' on no plaid carpet, no thank you." Rufus. *grin, headshake*
-"Deep like crap you do not want to think about." Shades of Flatliners? At least the 'dying and confronting the past' part of it?
-"I'll be a prima ballerina." Rufus is awesome. Glad we get to see him again.
-"You knew I wanted kids.... what does that even mean, 'you break everything you touch'?" ...and putting that together with the memory of his mom and the comment about his dad, yeah. Bobby does have a metric ton of worse in his head.
-"We never got to get past this." Jim Beaver is awesome. And also ow. Because I am pretty certain most of us have an idea of what he's drawing on for scenes like this. Oh Jim.
-Oh, hey, seeing himself rather than being himself. That's new.
-"You're too hard on yourself. You're more of a cranky drunk." I believe I have said before, that I would happily watch the Bobby and Rufus show too, and if I haven't I'm saying it now.
-That Reaper is conspicuously absent at the moment, isn't he.
-Okay, the kid is wee!Bobby. And this is going to get a hell of a lot more painful.
-And there's the shattered milk glass. Yeah. Bobby's on the right track now.
-Yeah. Ow.
-"We're gonna stop the damn Reaper." Oh dear. That never goes well.
-Oh boys.
-"Did your uncle ever make his wishes known in regards to organ donation?" Dude. World's. Worst. Timing. I realize you mean well, but you're going to be lucky not to get punched here. Also, your tie is a muddled camouflagey-greeny-browny diamonds thing. You're hiding, or hiding something. Wonder if the Leviathans have taken over the organ donor program? To them it'd practically be Meals on Wheels. *ponder*
-"He's not gonna die." *crosses fingers* It's the intense-Dean-cam, so that has to count for something, right? Even though it also has the effect of making the background look a little surreal and have a 'denying reality' kind of feel to it, and I love the photography department on this show but it can stop pre-emptively stomping on my heart any time now. O.O
-"Of course they're doing everything they can-" Ooo. You are so lucky that wasn't your face, organ donor guy.
-"Code grey to hallway north" on the speakers in the background. Lovely little detail of security being called, quite sensibly. As painful as it is, I love the detail and realism in this episode. It's making things that much harder to take, which means it's working.
-Yeaaaah, Leviathans. Remember that whole thing where you went and sprayed them all with Borax, rescued Bobby (mostly) and then got all distracted by the whole pain and trauma and worry and things? The Leviathans aren't really that distracted, and they can still hunt you down and eat you. So. Screwed.
-Oooo, the boss himself came. And sat in the parking lot really visibly. Where hospital security can see the guy who just punched a hall display thing and threatened a hospital official threatening one of the top 35 wealthiest men in the US. What's that you say? It's a trap? And a distraction (for the other Leviathans who are infiltrating the hospital and getting whatever they came to do accomplished without resistance since Dean isn't even warning Sam they're there, he's just pounding on the side of a limo like a rage-monkey, looking to beat the black slime out of someone)? Naaaaaaaah. Can't be. (I repeat. So. Screwed. *facepalm*)
-Oho, and I see in the cap above sneaky Dick has switched to a striped tie to throw off suspicion. NOT GONNA WORK, DICK. I CAN STILL SEE YOUR INNER MUTANT PAISLEY!
-...I may be slightly deranged. I apologize.
-"You're either laughing because you're scared, or you're laughing because you're stupid." No, he's probably laughing because hospital security is likely going to trank you in a minute and neutralize you as a defense point for whatever the Leviathans are planning in the hospital without having to reallocate any of his existing people to the task. Silly Dean. *ruffles his hair*
-Or not. Damn, security at this hospital is slacking!
-Book title: "The Origin of Evil." Somehow I don't think that's the one by
Ellery Queen. Might be
this one though, if "An Essay on" was left off the spine title.
-Also "Incubus," (we can all guess what that one's about) and the "[something that isn't Malleus and starts with an 'L', maybe Lexicon] Maleficarum" Can't make out the blue book title.
-Heh. Of course the book pages are blank. The only research you have access to is what you yourself remember, and you've had far more pressing things to do than memorize the King James Bible.
-"Only their Boss can do that and we don't want him involved." Aw, pweeeeeeease? *sparkly eyes* You can snark at each other and challenge him to a game of something for your life. Five card stud, maybe.
-Hellooo, magic item. Is that even gonna work, since this is all in Bobby's comatose head... hang the hell on. OMG IS THAT THE REAPER BINDING THING FROM 'FAITH'??? I AM PREPARING TO SHRIEK VERY LOUDLY IF IT IS!
-...Nah. Didn't look like it. The one in Faith was smaller and had a round bit at the head, and was, you know, broken in the episode. But HI CONTINUITY! anyway. Just because.
-And security hasn't even come by and 'discussed' things with Dean yet? Very lax.
-"Dick Roman was out there." *facepalm* You stopped and got a freaking coffee before passing intel on a potential inbound enemy to Sam?! I mean, coffee is a necessity and all, but dear god! Well, I'm going to handwave that as "Dean's too distressed to think straight right now." *handwaves*
-"Because it's real." Oh Sam. Sam with your head full of hallucinations and pain being how you tell what's real. Oh Sam.
-"You wanna hug and say 'we made it through it when Dad died'? We've been through enough." Yep. Dean's not going to take this well at all. Cleopatra Winchester, King of Denial. It's really not looking good for Bobby to remain breathing after this episode.
-Oh no you didn't. *winds back, listens* Yep. Of course they did. Modified Dean's family theme running on the soundtrack under that discussion there.
-And also yep. Because whether it's Lucifer, something from the monster blood, or just Sam's own fractured brain, there's no way it's going to cut him any slack with all this going on. (Also, that fic I wrote can still fit in just fine between the pre-credits sequence and Bobby's arrival at the hospital, so yay!)
-Aaaand Bobby's opened a door, so now he's somewhen else again, right? Possibly without Rufus, since who knows if the memory of him is going to retain cohesion and autonomy while Bobby's in a different era. Rufus is dead though, so maybe it's different for him, maybe he can get pulled into Bobby's head a little and exhibit some autonomy? Still. *facepalm*
-Or not. Bobby just opened the door, he didn't go through it, so he's in the same place? *ponders*
-"Yeah, I know, I ain't their Dad." Ow. In a few different directions.
-Ahhh... is it the Nothing making things disappear? I think now maybe it is. And that maybe it's representative of the condition of Bobby's brain. And that I really don't want to think about that right now. Dean's not the only Queen of denial in these parts.
-"First time anyone's actually pulled one on me while unconscious." Dude. It's Bobby. No shame in that.
-Hee! Sorry. Moment of dueling face-fuzz going on here. XD
-*nods about the explanation of the darkness* Yeah, that. Oh Bobby.
-"Come with me. Be done." Oh wow. 'Carry on my wayward son,/there'll be peace when you are done.' DAMMIT, SHOW. You just had to sneak that in there too.
-"I don't care."/"Why?"/"Because they're my boys." Technically not, but the unofficial Winchester mutual badass adoption process does go both ways. That said, OH BOBBEEEEEEE.
-"Because he's a bad kid, that's why."/"Well that's a load of crap." Oh I think this next bit might be excruciatingly painful and just a little cathartic.
-"Well, as fate would have it, I adopted two boys and they grew up great. They grew up heroes. So you can go to Hell!" Yeah. He didn't raise them, they were John's boys, but they mutually adopted each other over time, particularly after John's death. Bobby certainly did not break them, though most of the rest of the universe sure as Hell tried and occasionally succeeded, if only temporarily. I can see that Bobby saying this might be seen as dismissive of John, but I'm a John fan, and I don't consider this to be Bobby taking credit for raising them, I see it as Bobby taking credit for not damaging them, for being given charge of two kids while their dad was elsewhere doing dangerous things and not treating them like his father did him and his mom. This whole thing really explains a lot about his attitude towards John, if Bobby saw even a hint of anything that reminded him of his father. This may explain the infamous shotgun incident, if John being John bumped up against Bobby's personal history at a bad time. Also..."As Fate would have it"? Very interesting turn of phrase there. I'm not too sure Fate wouldn't have wanted them broken, given everything that's happened.
-"We're taking him out for surgery." *crossing every appendage I have* but there is far too much time left on the counter for comfort. :-/
-OH HI. Yeah, I was wondering if he might've. O.O
-Hunh. Shot his dad in the same spot he got shot. Interesting.
-"God is gonna punish you." And there it is, the line from before. From his mom. OW.
-HOLY CRAP IT'S THE SPIKY CLOCK!!!! LOOK! *points in the blurry background* IT'S STILL AROUND!!! \o/
-"Now go get a shovel and bury the old man out behind the woodshed." And that explains the running in from the woodshed before. And so begins a long lifetime of burying dead monsters. Sorry. Moving on.
-"You've got the only genetic case of 'bullet in the brain' I've ever seen." Ha! Yep, Same spot. And the Reaper is loose. That's the trouble with places going dark when you're not in them, the Reaper binding sigil can't still be painted on the floor that's not there.
-On the up side, no sign of Leviathan interference. Not that that means they aren't there.
-"Bobby, um, hey. Just... thanks. For everything." *swallows hard* Yeah, I, uh, think I'll be... yeah.
-Hand and arm movement. Okay, I knew it was probably coming, I still gasped.
-Oh crap, he's missing the last number!
-Now's the part where it really hurts, isn't it.
-Yeah.
-"...Idjits." ...okay. I'll admit, that got a brief but painful laugh. But it's just a last flash of hope just so show can stomp it all to tiny bits, right?
-Right.
-And back to the memory. One last time in one last memory.
-"Glad I saved the best for last." And if you'll all excuse me, I'm just going to break right down for a while. Here's some caps, talk amongst yourselves.
-"Well Bobby, stay or go, what's it gonna be?" *looks at counter* Aw crap, they're gonna cliff-hang us on whether Bobby goes on and goes to Heaven or stays behind as a ghost so there's a chance he can help the boys.
-Yeah. They did. Bastards.
Either way, there'll be some way to bring Bobby back. So he's not really gone. If it's as a ghost and the boys have to eventually... deal with him the way they usually deal with ghosts, that's really going to hurt. ...Sooo yeah, that's most likely what'll happen. But he'd be there if Sam gets out the talking board again and starts asking questions, and maybe he could do the vengeful spirit thing on any Leviathans that get within firing range of them.
Or maybe a certain someone will crawl his lazy ass out of that reservoir and poof him healed again. Because stranger things have certainly happened on this show. I don't know. But if it isn't an instant miraculous recovery, I'm thinking we won't find out for several episodes yet that Bobby decided to stay. I mean if Bobby decided to stay.
Like I said above in the spoiler/theory section, I always had a feeling Bobby would die (in a more permanent way than he has before). This episode was really hard for me to watch for a couple personal reasons, but it was a damn good episode still. However, it's going to be a very long time before I can work myself up to re-watch it. (As a note for those who know me well, I am likely going to go straight after posting this and watch the two-part Doctor Who episode "The End of Time" (which it took me what, over a year to work up to re-watching?) to cheer up. Yeah.)
Aaaaand the show is on hiatus until January! See you then.
