I am so ready to be done with work. Don't get me wrong, I love my job, but the paper cuts and the headaches are getting a little old. For those of you who don't know, I work at OSLC, a research group that focuses on socio-economic issues specifically relating to children, teens, and families. The grant I work for is about families with incarcerated parents. Every part of my job involves court files. I started out coding them, then pulling them from the database, then filing them. Now I am going through every page of every file of every inmate in the study to see if their file is up to date. If it's not, I pull whatever needs to be pulled, code it, and file it. Lather, rinse, repeat.
The upside is that I work with awesome people who bring their children and dogs to work. Sometimes I get to watch Scooby Doo movies, sometimes I have a small dog sitting in my lap, and sometimes I get to listen to music all day. Not to mention I make a little less than $10 and hour. Not bad for a first job.
Overall, my job is hardly worth complaining about. But the job I have lined up for the school year is way more exciting. Next year I'll be working in the scene shop. That means I will get paid to play with power tools, hang out with some of my favorite people, get splattered with paint every few weeks, and listen to rockin' music. I'm really looking forward to the hands-on, potentially artistic outlet. I love math like a fat kid loves cake, but the brain needs some recess time every once in a while. I'm not completely confident with my ability to build a set piece by myself, but that's what coworkers are for! Right now, I'm staying focused on the ever-exciting power tools.
