I am trying a new drug for the first time today. It's called Sinequan. It's an antidepressant, and according to
rxlist.com, scientists do not understand how or why it works, which is unsettling. Anyway, the reason I am taking it is that it has an antihistamine effect on smooth muscle cells, meaning it blocks allergic reaction in the gut.
Side effects observed in me this morning include: drowsiness, confusion, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, weakness, dry mouth, and loss of appetite (I'm just picking the ones that I had from the complete list of side effects). It put me down for about an hour this morning. I just lay on the couch with my eyes closed and hemorrhaged time. I was drowsy but not sleepy, so I didn't fall asleep, but I wasn't exactly thinking either. Ugh, what a nasty state to be in. I am up now but still very affected, although I am trying to cut the symptoms with a masala tea latté, and I think I'm past the worst of it.
Fortunately for me, Isabel has been happily playing by herself for the whole time. I managed to slime her up with sunblock before I passed out conscious, and she has been letting herself outside to play on the porches. She is so polite that she closes the screen door behind her when she goes in and out. She has been busy using a measuring cup to transfer water from her pool to an old pasta pot. Right now, she is in her bedroom reading books. It's lunch time, so I will go get her in a few more minutes.
The effects -- especially the drowsiness -- are supposed to diminish over time. I may not hang in with this pill long enough to find out. Although it would be brilliant to take right before bed time, wouldn't it? As long as there's no apartment fire in the night. ;-) To be fair, it seems to have completely stopped my hives, and that makes it the first treatment I have tried so far that has been effective. Grr, this is a terrible decision to have to make!
