Even though we have lived here in Texas for 2½ years, sometimes it feels as foreign as the first months we were here.
This afternoon Erik & I took a park break with Isabel, since she had been very patient with us during the day. She played on the toddler equipment and watched the other children, and had fun getting good and tired out. After a few hours, when it was clear that she was tired, we decided to head home. Most of the other families had already left, but one family with two boys who looked about eleven and fifteen showed up. As we were walking out, the father said to the younger kid, "Hey watch this" and he lifted a toy rifle to his cheek and shot the older son, who was on the swings, in the thigh. It must have been a BB gun or something because the kid squealed "Ow!" The father laughed and I was very grateful that Isabel was looking the other way.
It was surreal. I keep saying that I'm here as a visitor and not to judge, but all you dads out there who would never shoot their kids with a BB gun just got even more admirable to me.
