And so

I can hear screams sounding in the stone walls outside my cell. They echo, which only heightens their sense of urgency and despair. Like me, they feel trapped, shackled in a position from which there appears no escape. I've been here so long that the musty air almost smells like home, and the thought of it has me forcing the bile back into my stomach.

The loud clack-clack of the warden's boots ring clear and I know he is coming for me. He needs me again, though what gruesome task he has lined up is well beyond my imagination by now; this place has sucked the soul from me... almost. In the crack of light beneath the door, the only beacon in this place of darkness, I see two lines of shadow where he stands before my most humble abode. I fidget with my shackles as he turns the rusted lock.

As he steps in the light from the hall shines off his bald pate and I am nearly blinded by it. I can barely make out his face among the dark silhouette, but I can see that he is smiling expectantly. He doesn't expect this. As he reaches me, the words of a proposition on his lips, there is a final click, and then the harmonious chorus of my chains falling to the floor.

This is just the beginning.
