Navigation of the Future is Based on Understanding the Past

Dec 31, 2007 13:47

It's New Year's Eve. A time when we all think about the future, even if it's only a few weeks ahead. The best way to look into the future weather in microview or macroview is to look into the past. "How boring" you say? Not true. Simple facts, nice pictures, and best of all stories are great ways of viewing the past.

In this spirit I present you with some fun history. This is an interactive website that has info, pics, and stories about each state in the US. I of course have linked you to my state, but there is an interactive map that makes it easy enough to find the rest. Take a look at mine, yours and your friends' states. You might just learn a little insight into the people who come from and/or live there.

As an added bonus here are the words to Auld Lang Syne (which most modern people don't know). At least partially written by Robert Burns in the 1700's, it was first published in 1796 after Burns' death. Early variations of the song were sung prior to 1700 and inspired Burns to produce the modern rendition. "Auld Lang Syne" literally means "old long ago" in Scotts.

Auld Lang Syne

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

And surely ye'll in your pint-stowp,
And surely I'll in mine,
And we'll take a cup o kindness yet,
For auld lang syne!

We twa have run about the braes,
And pou'd the gowans fine,
But we've wander'd monie a weary fit,
Sin auld lang syne.

We twa have paidl'd in the burn
Frae morning sun till dine,
But seas between us braid have roar'd
Since auld lang syne.

And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
And give us a hand o thine,
And we'll take a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne
